I followed the guide exactly and all I do after doing a 30/30/30 reset is Add the Virtual Interface and it refuses to show up, only dd-wrt will show up but not dd-wrt_vap. It will not connect even if I manually attempt to connect.
P.S. MAC addresses are left off on purpose.

At the very real risk of being accused of thread necro-bumping, I thought I'd provide a solution to anyone else trying to get multi-SSID wifi going on one of these old girls.
I too was having trouble getting the wl0.1 radio to transmit. After trying tomato and various newer (ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/04-25-2016-r29519/broadcom/) and older (ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_mini_wrt54gs.bin) dd-wrt builds, the build that finally got VAP's working is "DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/22/09) micro (SVN revision 12548M VINT Eko)", download from here: ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24_TNG/svn12548/
I'm not saying that's the best or only build, but it's doing the job here.
[EDIT: Fantastic - I've got VLAN tagging working too (via pfSense, through a netgear GS108Tv2 switch, and am using the WRT54GS simply as an AP). Gotta love the power of dd-wrt & pfSense - a match made in heaven]
