Activate USB NAS w/Linksys Cisco e4200 w/big DD-WRT
I have been reading and trying to get my USB drive to work and nothing... I don't know what I'm doing, can someone offer advice
I'am running a Linksys E4200 flashed with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (12/20/11) big - build 18024
This has USB support and NAS in the BIG build
Can someone outline the process to add a standard USB external drive 160 gigs approx that is setup to work with normal windows PC's
IE do I have to format it with Gparted? is there a way to use the whole thing as 1 drive, do I get a normal windows share to use it or only FTP, if you need to FTP how? what about SAMBA in the setup? the instructions seem to be all over the place and or outdated.
I just want to share a USB hard disk with my kids on my home network...
Someone got a simple step by step faq for the BIG version of DD-WRT?
Thank you...

looks like you got all the setting correct. what is happening or not happening?
i have successfully run the the FTP and Samba sharing on 18777 and 19432 without issue. it actually works well for me-only difference is I formatted my drive to EXT3-when I used NTFS I could see the CPU get overloaded.
you should be able to go to Windows Explorer and type
\\ipadress(of your router) and it should give you the shares. if you are able to do that, should be able to right click on the share and make it a drive letter.
you should be able to go to an FTP client or even a webbrowser and go to
ftp://ipadress(of your router):21 and you should see something

I've been scouring the internet on how to set up my 2TB Toshiba (USB) on my WRT-610 Using a SP2 of the firmware. The pages George here has put up are seemingly identical to my set up. I too have no clue of how to see the drive on my computer. In addition, I want to access this drive from XBMC. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance MAD!!!
did you save, apply changes and reboot the router with the USB drive attached?
under disk info, does it say you have something mounted under /mnt ?
if that doesn;t work, try a different drive like a smaller capacity USB flash drive. Toshiba external drives act weird sometimes. I had one and it did not mount. yes, i am saying that your branded Toshiba drive might be the issue so try a different drive. Also, if its NTFS you need, you need to partition as MBR and you need to be running the BIG version of the firmware. All others support ext2/ext3.
if that all worked, you should have a share at \\ipaddress\test
as far as xbmc, can it see network drive letters or unc paths?

I'm using 2 Macs and a Windows 7 pc.
If I use Mozilla (ftp:"ipadress":21) I can see a single folder that's named "lost+found"
but can do nothing to it : /
When looking at the "SharePoint" file, it recognizes "root" login, but reverts to guest. It recognized any other account I make in the NAS tab, but reverts back to guest after a few secs.
I partitioned and formatted as described, but no joy at being able to use the hard drive for anything : /
one last thing: the connection is recognized on the macs as "smb://dd-wrt/Public".... I didn't make a public folder. That's write, I have no idea of what I'm doing. Please help, Mad! : ) Anyone! : )
seems like you are trying to use optware. to use optware you need to mount under /opt.
i am kind of new to optware too so I can only tell you what worked for me. I haven;t tried all the possibilities to flesh out what does not work. i;ve only got it working with 2 usb flash disks on different ports with the whole partitions as ext2. I haven't tried the multiple partioning you did.
i think there is an automount script built into optware that mount the rest of the data partition correctly under /tmp/mnt but I am not sure.
the fact that you can get to the ftp service means that ftp is running but your mount point specified in the drop down is wrong. in my installation i have it set to /mnt. I used winscp and putty to ssh into my router to verify that is where my data drive is mounted. yours might be different because you have some weird partition.
the fact that you got an smb share of public means that the optware version of Samba loaded and i can only guess that it;s using the generic default smb.conf file which has a public share defined in it and no security so the only ones who can get in are guest and root. what I have found is if I hit apply in the NAS tab, it seems to relaunch Samba with the settings defined on the Tab. the public share turns into the share with the security on the tab. I don;t know why but it works for me. the mount point for me is located in /tmp/mnt

I used putty to get into my router and verify what the drive was doing. And now it all makes sense. Seems that it sees the drive, but is getting errors. I am guessing that it is because this Toshiba 2TB is a 3.0/ 2.0 backwards compatible. I am not certain if the WRT610 even supports 2.0 but this is what it looks like in Putty. Thanks for the help Mad. But I think I'll try a diff avenue. [/img]
