Thank you in advance for reading my post.

I have a WRT610N (on the bottom of my router I do not see v1 nor v2). I flashed dd-wrt build 14896.
I have a Western Digital external HDD, USB 3.0, 3TB.

Issue: I want to connect the HDD to my router and use the HDD as USB storage or NAS (I do not know the difference between the two); I want to access the data on the HDD via WIFI Smile

A couple of days I tried to manage to get it work:
- I formatted the HDD as NTFS;
- I partitioned the HDD in 4 partitions;
+ Optware
+ Linux swap
+ JJFS (enabled JJFS)
+ Data

Under Services-USB I enabled the following USB support 'radio buttons':
- Core USB Support
- USB 2.0 Support
- USB Storage Support
- ext2/ext3 File System Support
- FAT File system support
- Automatic Drive Mount

'Run-on-mount script name' has been left empty.
Disk Mount Point is set to '/mnt'.

Both did not worked out for me. The blockzise is in GB's. This is with NTFS:
Code:

--- /dev/discs/disc0/disc
Block device, size 746.5 GiB (801535688704 bytes)
DOS/MBR partition map
Partition 1: 349.3 GiB (375069736960 bytes, 732558080 sectors from 256)
Type 0x07 (HPFS/NTFS)
Status: Not mounted - Unsupported file system or disk not formated

This is the info with the four partitions:
Code:

--- /dev/discs/disc0/disc
Block device, size 746.5 GiB (801535688704 bytes)
DOS/MBR partition map
Partition 1: 32 MiB (33554432 bytes, 65536 sectors from 256)
Type 0x83 (Linux)
Partition 2: 8 MiB (8388608 bytes, 16384 sectors from 65792)
Type 0x82 (Linux swap / Solaris)
Blank disk/medium
Partition 3: 20.50 MiB (21495808 bytes, 41984 sectors from 82176)
Type 0x83 (Linux)
Blank disk/medium
Partition 4: 349.3 GiB (375006298112 bytes, 732434176 sectors from 124160)
Type 0x83 (Linux)
Blank disk/medium
Status: Not mounted - Unsupported file system or disk not formated

The status is, according to my analysis, the issue; it does not mount:
Code:
Status: Not mounted - Unsupported file system or disk not formated

I hope someone can help me solving this issue.
Please, ask me for more info when needed.

Thank you in advance

Not an answer, but commiseration Wink

I have a Netgear WNDR 3800 with an attached Seagate USB 3.0 3TB drive... today I installed dd-wrt (v24-sp2 (03/19/12) std SVN revision 18777) as the OEM control panel didn't give a whole lot of options (that worked) for controlling shares - but it did recognize the drive.

After installing dd-wrt, I have pretty much *exactly* the same error as you do, right down to the partition sizes. Rather than seeing the drive as a 2.72TB partition (as Windows Vista does), it sees it as a bunch of smaller partitions.

To reiterate:

Although I can't really comment on your problems (it's been a while since I used USB within DD-WRT, but feel your pain.) I really wouldn't recommend it.

I have a WRT610n, too, and I tried to plug my 2tb WD Elements drive into it. It worked, but the access speed topped out at around ~4.5MB/s, and quickly dropped to something much lower as the RAM and CPU usage skyrocketed. It was nearly impossible to do anything, let alone actually anything that would fill the 2tb drive. (It would probably take 2-3 months of 24/7 uploading over ethernet to fill it at the speeds I saw)

If you guys do decide to keep going with it, I *strongly* urge you to reformat to ext2 or 3. The drivers to read/write NTFS on linux are very inefficient so they need a lot of CPU power to maintain good speeds and when the CPU is bogged down, all network routing grinds to a halt, too. You guys also actually do have the option to reformat, my drive was already full of stuff so I was stuck with NTFS.

If you really want drives over the network, I can only suggest that you buy a P4 box (or better) off of eBay or Craigslist. I got one for $40 from a local computer recycling place, and it happily shared out all my drives and more at 30-35MB/s, with the added benefit of being easier to set up and about a dozen times more powerful.

Sidenote: I've recently further upgraded that box to an AMD 5000+ and it now also runs XBMC, still the best choice I ever made in regards to my home network.

Sidenote2: To identify your version number, look at the CPU section of the Status tab in the Web-UI. 300mhz is V1, anything else is V2.

Interesting... I've been searching a bit in the forums, and while I haven't found much in the way of answers, I will say that what I have found is pretty disappointing. Seems like a number of people have been having similar problems... can't tell for sure if its just drives over 2TB, or USB 3.0, or some combination. Doesn't seem to be much happiness with the mix, for sure.

Just for giggles, I took another Seagate USB 3.0 drive, this one a portable 1.5TB drive that I had used for some clonezilla imaging to get me through some HDD upgrades on various machines. Also formatted NTFS. DD-WRT recognized the partitions correctly this time, but still refused to auto-mount.

Since I don't have anything vital on that drive any more - and because I figure it'll be less obnoxious to re-format a 1.5 TB drive as opposed to a 3 TB one... I've got it hooked up to my desktop running Ubuntu 12.04, reformatting it to ext3. We'll see what, if any, difference that makes.

I'd rather not have the drive(s) hanging off either my desktop or the laptop - both are dual-boot for various reasons, and Vista doesn't play nice with ext-anything. I do have an older PC (Celeron w/ 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, running Lubuntu) playing as a light server/workstation that I could get a USB 3.0 card installed and use it... but honestly I'd kind of hoped to just retire the dang thing and have the 3TB drive hooked to my router - thats why I bought one with external USB port and then switched to dd-wrt in the first place!

Usually, DD-WRT is compiled with no GPT support. So, the way to support it would be recompiling a good build with enabling GPT support in the kernel. But this requires lots of care, since if you do something wrong (e.g. exceed flash size, or pass wrong options to the compiler) you could brick your router permanently. So another option would be to stick to an MBR partition table and forget about 1 GB of your hard disk.

So now it has to be not NTFS but ext2 or 3, and not GPT, but MBR?

okay... this is screwed up.

I re-formatted the 1.5TB drive w/ MBR partition table as ext3 on my desktop Linux box, and plugged it into the router - worked fine.

Then I re-formatted the 3TB drive w/ MBR partition table, with a 1TB partition and a 1.7TB partition, hoping to be able to mount them and share them separately. dd-wrt auto-mounted the larger partition, but didn't give me any way to mount the other one. Fine.

So I went back to the desktop machine, deleted the second partition, extended the first to fill the whole disk (2.7-ish TB), and created two folders on it (beyond the auto-created 'lost+found'), with the intent of sharing *those* separately.

Now dd-wrt can't 'see' the flippin' big partition (over 2TB) again, and won't automount what it does see:

Code:

Disk Info
--- /dev/sdb
Block device, size 746.5 GiB (801569722368 bytes)
DOS/MBR partition map
Partition 1: 349.3 GiB (375073931264 bytes, 732566272 sectors from 256)
Type 0x83 (Linux)
First 897 KiB are blank
Status: Not mounted - Unsupported file system or disk not formated

Apparently dd-wrt can't handle >2TB partitions? The only thing I wanted from dd-wrt was to be able to plug in that 3TB drive and share it over the LAN - and now I can't even go *back*. Guess I'll have to settle for the 1.5TB portable drive being chained to the router, and figure out what I'm going to do with the 3TB desktop drive.

Beautiful.

my situation is similar to yours-

i have had my USB San Digital 1.5 TB array connected to my Asus RT-N16 running 18777 and 19432 successfully. It;s formatted to EXT3 MBR and performance has been adequate. NTFS is slower so I will stick with EXT3.

Tried to bump it up to 3 TB but DD-WRT did not recognize it-tried GPUID NTFS(knew that wasnl;t going to work) and EXT3.

Strangely enough, recently installed Optware on the router and now my 1.5 tb raid array is not recognized anymoure-i get that Unsupported file system message too. Actually I wonder if EXT3 drive mounting is broken somehow-successful in mounting EXT2 formatted flash drives(4 and 16 GB) but could not mount EXT3 formatted 4 gig flash disk*unsupported file system).

Yeah... I'm kind of lost on this deal right now. Re-formatted the 1.5TB portable drive to MBR/ext3 on my Linux box, dd-wrt sees it and auto-mounts it, Windows laptop sees it via the network and can open it and all... but gives an IO failure when I go to copy files to it.

This is definitely way more of a PITA than I bargained for.

Any way to get my WNDR-3800 booted back to the OEM firmware? At least I could use the USB port as intended without all these (ultimately useless) gyrations...

not that it is guaranteed to help or not but i would flash the the latest firmware if possible. i had great success with 18777 and 19342. did some heavy writing to it and acronis truimage over Samba and ftp.

i do think that 2 TB is the limit though and maybe EXT2. definitely do not use NTFS.

not sure if this is helpful or not but I should have mentioned that I was using the Big version(has NTFS support not that i was using it). the Mega version doesn;t have NTFS. Not sure about what STD or USB/NAS has or doesn;t have.

Thank you all for your replies. But I am lost.

I have no technical background and do not know a lot about MBR's and so on.

Am I right when I conclude I cannot connect my WD 3TB USB3 HDD to the dd-wrt?

The latest dd-wrt firmware for my WRT610n is 14896. Is there a better version for me?

I divided my 3TB in 2 times 1.5TB. I also had Optware installed.
Still I had to mount the drive manually. Then 1 drive was mounted, the other 1.5TB was lost.

When manually mounted, I could access the drive via the network with the NAS-option. It was mounted to /mnt.

Saving data on the drive was only possible for about 500MB. Then copying data stopped and I had some errors.

Deleting the copied data resulted in an error: one file could not be deleted.

Because I don't really know how to continue, does someone have some suggestions?

Thank you in advance!

You may create an MBR partition table with PartedMagic (or any other recent partitioning program). Of course, this will erase (or at least make inaccessible) everything from the GPT partitions. So, you will lose all data from the HDD if you make it MBR, besides about 1 TB storage space will remain inaccessible, since MBR only supports 2 TB. In Linux there are some programs to convert from GPT to MBR without losing data, but I don't know how they handle disks larger than 2 TB, so you could lose all your data in the process.

The recommended build is 14929.
