Hello,

I have just purchased a tp-link TL-WA901ND (http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wa901nd) and was pretty miffed to discover that PoE was not 802.3af compliant, as the reason for buying it was to use with my poe switch.

using the provided PoE injector it powers up.

I took the injector apart and it looks like pin 4 + 5 are +ve (the pin in the middle of the power connector) and 7 + 8 are -ve. power plug is 12v 1A

As far as i can work out this is the pin configuration for PoE in passive mode.

Is it possible for me to hack my access point to work in active mode with my GS108P?

Dude, no need to post such a high size photo.

Code:
that PoE was not 802.3af compliant
Not totally true. It it compliant, using the spares (modeB): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_over_Ethernet

Note that Active PoE means using the same line as data, so you really want to do it? The difference between active PoE and passive PoE will be the availability of negotiate power requirements among equipments. If you want to go ahead (because I think your switch doesn´t power up your router), you have to add some resistance between pins to fool the switch at power up and then remove it. Something like the attached picture:

Not entirely true either. The 901ND uses a 12V Power-Supply, while 802.3af uses 40V. So there is, in fact, no way to supply the AP with power from a PoE switch.

Is this a passive PoE and will it be possible to power up a 24v dc equipment with it if the power supplied is 24v 1a from the adapter.

You can still power your AP via POE. Just buy a 12V POE splitter from Panoptic Technology like this: http://www.panoptictechnology.com/network-smart-adapters/

It's fully 802.3af compliant, so it will work perfectly with your POE switch.
