Hi all, I've been away from forums for a while, and it's great to see so many of you are still around Smile

Before I go and do something silly, I'd like check a couple of points regarding the e3000, and to get some advise on which stable-ish build to use to get the latest OpenVPN GUI. (I use router for basic home network and want my wife to be able to VPN into her home machine from work).

I'm currently running the recommended mega 14929 build, but the newer OpenVPN GUI seems to make the whole process much simpler so I'd like to give that a bash.

1) From the wiki, it seems as if I'm going to have to flash BS 16994 e2k-e3k to prepare for the new -nv60k type builds.
2) And then I can flash the appropriate mega -nv60k build.
3) Once I've done that I'm going to have to add the NAT loopback fix to the firewall script.
4) I use PPPOE to connect to ISP so that's a must have.

Is that correct? Anything else I should do or be aware of?

And which mega build do you recommend for OpenVPN? (The usual disclaimers apply: I know they're test builds and on mine own head be it).
.

If you are going for a 'VPN' build, I would really suggest Kong's mod. Kong has compiled it (based off of DD-WRT) with a few modifications and has optimized it for speed. I have had no complaints with it.

If you need reliable VPN, stick with Kong 18730M, newer builds have problems with VPN.

Thank you both for the pointer to Kong's mod. I'll give 18730M a go.

18730M is reputed as the most stable Kong build. Some say that 18050M has better VPN than 18730, although I thought that the problems with VPN came after SVN 18777 (an openssl update which fails on MIPS). See the discussion at http://svn.dd-wrt.com/ticket/2536

Rather than making a new thread thought I'd ask here.

I just acquired an E3000, what's the recommended build? As I understand it I first flash with

dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_std_usb_ftp-e3000.bin

Is there then an advantage to upgrading? I have no special requirements- it's only going to be used as a repeater.

Cheers

Quick follow up. The OP mentions 14929 mega, I've found 2 files which seem to fit the bill:

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-e2k-e3k.bin

I think it's the former I want, as the latter is more for initial flashing?

Use the e2k-e3k file only if it has been already flashed with DD-WRT. The file ending in e3000.bin is for initial flashing.
