Posted: Sun Sep 30, 2012 5:38 Post subject: Linksys E1200 V2 DD-WRT non-mini builds?
For reference:
1. The E1200 V1 has 4MB flash. The V2 model has 8MB flash.
2. If a E1200 router is ipv6 compatible, it's version 2. The box will tell you if it's ipv6 compatible.
3. The V2 model will have "Model No./Modele: E1200 V2" on the bottom of the physical router, NOT the box.
4. The trailed build of DD-WRT for E1200 V2 is dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e1200v2.bin.
5. The trailed build is simply flashed from the routers default web interface like any other firmware update.
This is where I'm at, a E1200 V2 router with DD-WRT mini up and running successfully. I'd like to take advantage of the 8MB flash though, and install the mega build.
In light of this, I have three questions:
Question 1 (Yes/No): Can the dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv64k.bin build be flashed on the E1200 V2 now that the trailed build is installed?
Question 2 (Yes/No): If NO (dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv64k.bin will not work), is there a big or mega build that WILL work with the E1200 V2?
Question 3 (Direct Link): If YES (there is a build that will work), can you provide the filename or link to said build?
I appreciate any assistance with this. I've done as much searching as I know how to locate an answer, but I couldn't find anything concrete either way. Thanks!
I appreciate your reply, however it doesn't have the particular detail or guarantee I'm looking for.
I'm aware that typically you can flash any number of builds for multiple routers. I'm asking for an exact build in this circumstance because Linksys routers tend to need builds marked nv60k and nv64k, etc, in order to not "brick" the router.
I believe the build I selected should work, I just wanted clarification so I didn't accidentally brick anything. I'd prefer a reply from someone with experience with Linksys routers specifically, or who's familiar with the restrictions they have.
Based on what I've seen on the forum, I'm not the only one who wants a concrete answer regarding the E1200. Thanks!

The build you selected should work on that router, provided its a V2 and has 8 meg of flash. _________________ The Peacock Thread <-- New? READ THIS!

In regards to the post you linked, user davidkennedy85 appears to have been trying to find a solution to the same problem I have now. He's been a contributor to several of the topics regarding the E1200 unit.
Primarily, he is not certain. Regardless, no one has cited a successful install outside of the trailed build for the E1200 yet. Additionally, davidkennedy85 has the E1200 V1 (4MB), I have E1200 V2 (8MB). The size of the build we can install is different, though the install process may be the same. I started this thread targeting the E1200 version 2, and want a definite, concrete, confirmed I have done it and it worked or I have the credibility to ensure you it will work-themed response. I'd rather not play beta tester.
If you had read my original post, you'd note that I already referenced a particular build I thought might work. It, too, is nv64k. I was pointing out that my specific router (E1200 V2) may require another build for whatever reason. I merely wanted confirmation (again, reference my original still-unedited post).
I have looked for anything I can to validate the risk of flashing another DD-WRT build, but have not come across anything other than your word that it will work. You lost some credibility originally by not fully reading my original post before replying. You lost all credibility by resorting to an insult:

Anyone else,
I'd appreciate any assistance with my original post.

The only difference between a trailed build, and the generic firmware is the the trailed build has special headers for flashing the file within stock firmware.
4. CHECK and UNDERSTAND the proper build for your router. The ROUTER memory (flash memory...not RAM) determines what build you can put on it. It is simple math. If you have a 4mb flash chip, you can't put a build larger than 4mb on it because it won't fit, even if you wish to have advanced features. In other words, don't look at the features and decide which one you want and then install it. You will often brick your router. This is bad.
Trailed builds are builds with the router model in the name. BS builds are often, but not always trailed builds. These builds are often necessary for initial flashing of a virgin router because they have the right header in the file that allows it to be flashed on the stock firmware. Once dd-wrt is installed, you should not use a trailed build, and should use a generic build instead UNLESS you have one of the new Linksys Routers (E2000, E3000 E4200) that allocate nvram differently. Those routers (eg. E2000 and E3000, E4200) must ALWAY USE A TRAILED BUILD for initial flashing, and some upgrades from initial flashing REQUIRE nv60 or nv64 builds. (See below for further info.).
Additional Note for E2000 E3000 and E4200 etc. users:
Do the initial flash with the trailed build that contains your router model number...(example...xxx_e2000.bin for a E2000 model) Once you have done the initial flash...you can upgrade firmware using the build that contains xxx_e2k_e3k.bin for all subsequent flashes. (If you are using a 16758 or higher build, which is newer than is recommended, you must use a nv60k build rather than the e2k-e3k build - See the wiki for your router and this post: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=148350)
Builds with nv60k in the name can only be used with routers that have a 60k nvram space. Builds with nv64k in the name can only be used on routers that have a 64k nvram space. If you use one of these builds and your router doesn't support it, you will brick your router and will need a serial cable to fix it. If you don't use one of these builds and your router needs it, you will brick your router and will need a serial cable to fix it. These nv60k/nv64k are only being used in very new routers, and the need to use these builds, if it applies to your router SHOULD be explained in the wiki for your router. No k24 supported routers use nv60/nv64.
Support for the E1200 V2 was added with changeset 18909. Which can be referenced within the SVN.
I cannot offer you proof... as I do not have an E1200 V2. However, in order for support to be added a router needs to be donated so that the devs can work with it to add support for it to dd-wrt. So in essence... they were the beta testers.
Also, that was not meant to be an insult, it was a fact. True.. I said it in a snarky way.
I don't need to have credibility to give you facts supplied by credible sources. If you want help, that is my answer. If you want to continue trying to erode my credibility in your mind because I have not tested the router personally.. well then you can just continue to sit there with a mini build... _________________ The Peacock Thread <-- New? Okay to answer this question, I've decided to do the beta test myself. I've gone ahead and installed the BIG, and so far, there haven't been any problems.
The issue with using Mixed when creating a wireless bridge appears to have been stabilized after I did the upgrade. Before, I had to use BG-Only because of randomly dropped connections between this router and the base station. As of this moment, after 15 minutes of my last reset, there has only been 1 error in the transmission with this build. In the mini build, that was at 15-25 errors every 15 minutes.
Everything appears to be working. Only 2 receiving errors, 1 transmission error (that was there after the reset). Not sure about what else I should be testing here, but so far donowolf, the BIG has performed well.

i followed the wiki, and installed the
dd-wrt.v24-19342_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-nv64k.bin
build. it appears to be working fine, though i haven't tested it too much. I have it set as a repeater bridge at the moment.
i'm not an expert, but i do have a little experience playing with routers. _________________ I'm an equal opportunity router user
