Show me the output from cat /proc/bus/usb/devices when you have the modem attached.

Connect to the routers web gui, go to Administration Tab, Commands Tab.
Enter cat/proc/bus/usb devices in the command window and click Run Command.
Paste the output here.

Looks like someone else posted a problem with this dongle on a different router.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=678052

My Dongle is E353 branded by network operator "THREE UK"
i have removed the network lock if that helps.
Looks like the Model number under the cover is E353Wu-1

Yes but that was a slightly different problem, the sticks initial (cd-rom mode) usb id was not supported by dd-wrt so the stick didn't switch over to modem mode.

Your stick has the same modem id (12d1:1506) as his stick and as many other Huawei stick has after being mode_switched but your devices listing is quite different from the other 12d1:1506 and that is the reason why it doesn't work for you.
It is not possible to support 12d1:1506 with that configuration since it would break the support for the other 12d1:1506 sticks.

Did you run some 3rd party unlocker software on it?
That could explain the strange interface list in the devices file.

It is btw not only the interfaces that differs in the devices file, it is also the sticks USB Class ( Cls=ef(unkn.) ) and its firmware revision number..

Yes i used 3rd party unlocking software to remove the network lock,so this variation of E353 is a no go then????,does removing the network lock make that much of a differnce?? is there a list of compatible branded HSDPA+ modems which will work out of the box on the current firmware.

I wouldn't recommend buying provider locked sticks and then unlocking them with 3rd party software, some unlocks are correctly done while others messes up the stick.
There is a possibility though that this can be solved with a new driver but I can't give you a guarantee for it, I will push for the developers to do a driver update for the next public build whenever that is.

As I will be only using the 3G function on my router for back up Internet should my adsl go down for any reason,is there a way I could get this dongle working on my router as I' am not intending to purchase another dongle (temp fix) while waiting to see if a driver would be added in a future build.

Here is a list of the rebranded Versions
http://3g-modem.wetpaint.com/page/Huawei+E353
This may be a stupid question but is the rebrand model in my case E353wu-1 hardware or firmware dependent? I ask because the latest dd-wrt build now support the E353s-2 ,if firmware dependent could I flash my dongle with E353s-2 firmware.

It is old post but I have question about the E353(s-2):

I currently use the svn 18777 on my WNR3500L. Is this stick already with this svn supported?

Or what svn build is minimum to use this stick? How to find what stick is at which svn build is supported?

It was added in changeset 18839 so any build thereafter should work.
This if the usb id is 12d1:14fe/12d1:1506 , the Huawei E-number is not very useful for identifying sticks.
