Hello dd-wrt users,

I'm looking for the most stable and secure firmware for my Asus RT-N16.

I've read:
- Announcements
- Wiki http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N16
- searched on the Internet

Is it correct that two kind of people create dd-wrt firmware?:
1. dd-wrt team
2. other users.

The RT-N16 does REQUIRE the K26 Firmware builds as Broadcom has not released drivers for the non-K26 builds --> Wiki Asus RT-N16.

Firmware possibilities:
1. Router Database maintained by dd-wrt team.
Latest downloads:
- v24 preSP2 [Beta] Build 14896
- v24-K26 [Beta] Build: 13309

2. Wiki Asus RT-N16 maintained by ????
Recommended firmware:
- dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx
- dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin

I know through http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/What_is_DD-WRT%3F#K2.6_Build_Features what kind of features the build offers.

Then I looked at ftp directory: ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/

year: 2013
date/firmware: 02-11-2013-r20675
broadcom_K26
download: dd-wrt.v24-20675_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx

This firmware is from 2-11-2013, so it's new.
But I can find any release information, what is changed since the last firmware?

Questions:
1. Possible to install v24 preSP2 and v24K26?
2. What is the best stable and secure firmware and why? Experience?
3. What about maintenance, noticed that the firmware versions of 'BrainSlayer' is an ongoing development, are all firmware versions kept up to date by security?

Hope to hear from you guys!

Greetings...

Hey, I upgraded my firmware to the "BrainSlayer" one, I had the official DD-WRT builds installed prior to that. It seems that it's working just fine, but I installed it because I was having problems with the RT-N16 filling up the NVRAM and resetting, so I'll report back if I have any trouble.

I personally like the Fractal build of 20006. It ran very smooth on my RT-N16...and OTRW2 ran just fine on it as well with my little 8Gb USB stick.

If you don't need Optware or some of the other fancier features,
try the newest Asus release listed in my sig.

I had DD-WRT running on my RT-N16 for a while, but recently it was having
wireless issues in N-Mode - the channels kept hopping around on their own.

On the newest Asus firmware - the N-Signal is strong, solid, and stable
I miss some of the functionality of DD-WRT on it, but the N-Mode was the most important to me.

I personally love Kongs work, Manly for built in DNLA services. Very stable release, Current version is 20500 build, im runing 19545 build right now. With a 2TB NAS attached...

With the latest Rodgerio 4.3 CFW for my PS3 and the latest Showtime I can stream 1080p wirelessly without hick-up!

But yeah Kong does great work!

EDIT forgot link here..

Thanks! I'll check that out too. I just want to try something different because I am experiencing pretty poor wireless performance on 16785.

I flashed the fractal build of 20006 yesterday and so far am very pleased with it. The wireless signal and performance is quite a bit better. Thank you for the suggestion.

Now I just need to find a better build for my WRT310N that I have wired as a wireless access point on the other end of my house. Build 14929 is giving me poor wireless performance when streaming and much slower upload/download speeds than it should.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

I'm running the latest BETA build of 20675 standard build on my 310Nv1 and its working quite well. I have mine setup as a RB unit connected to my ReplayTV unit.

Ah yes, thank you for the recommendation. Your last recommendation has worked out well for me, so I think I will give build 20675 a whirl.

Thanks again. I am very appreciative.

I don't want to hijack this thread talking about my WRT310N, but I thought I would post a quick follow-up in case anyone read the earlier suggestions.

The fractal build of 20006 is working great on m RT-N16. No complaints. Thanks!

However, my WRT310N is not happy with the latest BETA build of 20675 standard build. It works fine for a while and then after a scheduled reboot, it is unresponsive and the blue power led starts flashing. All I have to do is do a power cycle of my router and it starts working again, but I am wondering if the build didn't get flashed correctly.

I am going to try flashing it again to see if that helps, and I might try flashing the mini version of 20675 to see if that makes any difference since I don't use many of those extra features on this router. If all that fails, I'll be searching for a different build.

EDIT: No luck with the reflashing and the mini build. I get the same flashing blue power led. So I am off to find a new build.

Is Loopback fixed on the 20006 build? Have you played around with VPN at all to see if it's functional? Some builds I worked with after 14xxx had issues with VPN PPTN VPN functionality.

Hey, can anyone post the 20006 build? The link doesn't work.
