Hi, I have a 4500 v1 unit and initially had the February 25 k26 build flashed on it, which worked well with the exception of some glitches in access restrictions.

Recently I upgraded to the KC3 build with the hope of seeing proper access restriction functionality. But it turned out that this version caused a number of connectivity and internet throughput problems. In particular when I turned the unit off with the switch on the back, and then back on, not only did my laptop have no internet anymore, but it would also not get internet from any other access point as well.

I am aware that as a novice I may have done something wrong, although I did not change any parameters other than the router ip addresss to 191.168.1.2 because my internet box already has the .1 address.

In the end I ended up reverting back to the original Netgear rom (in order to get the 5G light back) and then back to the k26 v24 Sp2 build from February 25

Please let me know how your installation worked

Hi
I've been reading around this site and feel so out of my depth it's scary.

I have a WNDR4500, and the only functionality I'm looking for is the ability to wake up a PC on my home network via the internet. With the stock firmware, it's not possible.

Does this firmware have that facility?

Many Thanks

J

Yes DD-WRT supports WOL. To manually wake a device from over the internet you will need to enable remote administration on the router.

Good Luck!

Mrengles

You can also setup port forward for WOL. Then use arp command to define the forwarded IP as a broadcast address. This way, you can use WOL client website/app to wake up your PC without going through the dd-wrt UI.

Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, but I haven't been able to find a definitive answer:

Whats the procedure to flash dd-wrt on WNDR4500?
In BrainSlayer's repository (ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/07-24-2013-r22118/netgear-wndr4500/), there are two files - .chk and .bin.
I'm not sure which one to flash first and how to do the procedure end-to-end.

I've flashed dd-wrt on a Linksys E3000 before which was pretty simple: 30/30/30, flash, 30/30/30.

Thanks very much!

First, return to stock firmware by flashing .chk from Netgear.

Then flash .chk from here http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC/Initial/
Choose appropriate version either v1 or v2

then you can flash the latest firmware .bin, currently dd-wrt.v24-K3_AC.bin http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC/22200/

BTW, is there a requirement for 30/30/30 resets in between .chk and .bin flashing?

In http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC/Initial/ there is no explicit distinction between v1 and v2 (unless I missed something?) -Having flashed the 16 MB rom on my 4500v1, it caused many problems (see my other posts)
can anyone please clarify?

thanks

I think v1 file is named dd-wrt.v24-K3_WNDR4500.chk and v2 file is dd-wrt.v24-K3_WNDR4500V2.chk

It could be so, however, one is the 7MB version, the other the 16MB version. My understanding based on a readme that I recently read is that the 16MB version has more functionality included, such as voip for example, but the ROM is otherwise the same. Would anyone be able to clarify?

Thanks

I installed the latest Kong AC and everything looks good, other than not being able to choose 5GHz channels, but then I noticed that there's no nano! I want to replace my gateway with the WNDR4500, but that's kind of a showstopper.

I tried installing via ipkg, but it appears to be borked. Is there a way, or should I try a different firmware? I know I had nano when I was using the unofficial DD-WRT build...

Well, after several tries, I finally found an opkg that runs on 3.x kernel DD-WRT. OTRW2 http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/OTRW2_%28Optware_the_right_way_Take_2%29#Kernel_3.x
The install went a little crazy. I think it was from the earlier optware attempts though. Rebooting and re-installing sorted it out.

I did have to edit the prep script (with vi) to bypass the partition size check though. My /opt isn't quite 512MB, but I didn't feel like repartitioning it. It seems kind of silly to demand 512MB, when the install only uses 28.8MB.

Oh, and I also worked out the 5Ghz channel selection. Just had to fiddle around with the options. I still think there's something screwy going on there.

Nice build. I have my WNDR4500 running Repeater Bridge mode. A Buffalo WZR-HP-AG300H is the primary router. It's an easy setup, but I do lose 1/2 the bandwidth in this mode ((http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge).

Hi. I have a problem.
I am using DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/23/13) kongac on WNDR4500. And I am using L2TP connection to my internet provider.

First few days after setup it worked just fine. Then it started breaking connection exactly every 24 hours. But now it started breaking connection exactly every 6 hours!
When connection is broken I see the following logs:

Sep 10 22:45:13 gate user.info syslog: vpn modules : vpn modules successfully unloaded

....

In order to restore connection I log into web admin panel and hit Connect button. Usually first time router reboots w/o repairing connection and on the second hit it reboots and connection is set. if it is not (which happens in 50% cases) I hit Connect again and it reboots and usually connection is finally set.

What can I do to make connection stable (Keep Alive: Redial Period: 30 sec - is set of course)?

since I only see part of the log I can only guess, you are on DSL. Most providers kick you off after 24h. This part of the log shows one thing, your wan connection is gone and services are stopped.

You are still using a build that came with qos bug, if you use qos you should upgrade in order to avoid crashes.

I am not on DSL - I am using regular ethernet connection to provider with L2TP (VPN) to internet.
And problem is not in the kick off fact. But in not auto restoring connection after kick off. Even manual Connect button don't help - need to press it 2 - 3 or even 4 times.

re: QOS - yes, I am trying to use QOS, however I really didn't see any difference - when I download torrents my LAN is busy and I can't see video from another computer - so really QOS is not working and I can live w/o it.

thanks Kong for your work on this firmware!
I've been able to successfully install your latest build on my WNDR4500 router!

My question for you (or whomever) is how can I setup other vlans past 15? (or reassign existing ones)
I need to setup vlan's with VIDs 33,34,35 for my iptv service. I'm trying to replace my actiontec router with my WNDR4500.

any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated

thanks

Nope, currently there is a hardcoded limit in the driver, which matches the max number of vlan ports.

It could be changed, but requires then it is difficult for us to update the driver, thus only BrainSlayer can decide if he wants to add such a modification.

I don't know if I am doing something wrong but Wireless performance is just not there, I can barely get 11Mbps on both bands, is there something else I should be doing?
