OK, where to start, I've flashed DD-WRT onto many different routers and not had too much of an issue. I saw a decent deal for a Router on Newegg and it said DD-WRT so I just got it without too much extra research.

I have not found a Wiki or Forum page for this router, maybe I don't know where to look. I read the announcements, and found a Broadcom page that isn't part of Peacock that says use 14929, but that directory doesn't have a file with RT-N53 in the name. (too much of a noob to know if that matters.)

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom/

I have flashed initially: dd-wrt.v24-18702_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N53.trx, then I updated to: dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N53.trx.

The router appears to work, but its quirky, and by that I mean WAN, LAN1, LAN2, LAN3 are on the LAN segment and LAN4 is the WAN interface. Wireless seems 'slow' almost like a 200-800ms latency. And the only LED indicator that functions is the power LED. From previous searching users reported that LAN1 is the WAN port of this router, but that's not what I've experienced.

So here's my question, is 21061 the best out there for the RT-N53? If it isn't then I assume its a 14929 build that's best since that's whats generically recommended in the announcements, but what file do I flash? dd-wrt.v24_mega_generic.bin?

Here is my system info.

I've read the rules, peacock and firmware files and I am still confused as to what I actually need to be putting on the router, I know its a Broadcom with enough NVRAM for a mega, and is a 64K, but not how to find a correct firmware for it.

Its Complicated Forum Rules.

Here is the latest for the rt-n53 ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/03-25-2013-r21061/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N53.trx

I would think that you could then use the appropriate nv64k build after that or a k2.6.big or mega .bin? Not sure.

I am running the 21061 build now, so is the trx file like the basic os+specific kernel compiled and then you load a mega or other bin file over that? Most of the 'make sure you read this' posts say what not to do, and since this router doesnt have a install page its confusing for me.

The .trx file is what you install when going from stock to dd-wrt. Then you load other builds according to what you need and size.

Edit due to auto correct.

Ok based on what I've learned, I need to flash a mega bin file to get the missing stuff fixed/updated.

Do I use the ~mega.bin or ~mega-nv64.bin?

NVRAM
22.93 KB / 64 KB

File:dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv60k.bin 7689 KB 3/25/2013 2:55:00 PM
File:dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv64k.bin 7689 KB 3/25/2013 2:56:00 PM
File:dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega.bin 7688 KB 3/25/2013 2:56:00 PM

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/03-25-2013-r21061/broadcom_K26/

Or do I stick with the recommended older build?

I'm not sure about the 64k or just plain ones but I do know you can't use 14929. The minimum build you can use is 17967.

I have not tried any yet. I have not had much time to mess around, and from what I googled I can not find the difference between a mega-nv64k.bin and mega.bin other than 1KB....I think I will try the mega-nv64k.bin just because the router is a 64k....

There is a new TRX file in the latest build. 4-01-2013-r21153, I will try the mega-nv64K from that and see what happens...

I tried to flash the dd-wrt.v24-21153_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega-nv64k.bin, but after the 30-30-30 is was still the old mini. So for grins I flashed the new trx file. Which took, I then tried the mega-nv64 for that version 21153, it again did not take after the 30-30-30, still the new mini build. So finally I tried the plain mega.bin and it took.

For those just starting out.
1: Flash this file.
ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/04-01-2013-r21153/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-21153_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N53.trx
2: 30-30-30
3: Reset password.
4: Flash this file.
ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2013/04-01-2013-r21153/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-21153_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega.bin
5: 30-30-30
6: Reset password.
7: Enjoy!

Things to note. Wan, LAN1, LAN2 LAN3 are LAN ports, LAN4 is the WAN port. 5GHz is not working, LED indicators are not working.

Some of these things can easily be fixed if you or someone else extracts their bootloader (CFE) and upload it here.

You can only download the cfe file when running dd-wrt, it doesn't work for stock firmware.
