Has anyone been able to successfully install custom firmware on the TEW-639GR???

This is a forum, read what people say before posting.

Alright, I'm really sick of not having DD-WRT on that router. I want to port DD-WRT to it. I can't seems to find docs on how to port it. I know I could use the same kernel config than the AR690W, but this simply require a different bootloader. Now, where to start? There must be people here who does this on new router. How do you do? I don't mind soldering a JTAG port if it's any help.

I have a TEW-639GR v2 that I just popped open (stock firmware on these things is garbage...) There is an unpopulated 4 pin header right in the middle of the board that's pretty obvious. Scoped it for a sec and noticed it's a 3.3v serial port.
Pinout is-
1: 3.3v
2: GND
3: TX (router transmit)
4: RX (router receive)

57600,8,n,1

root access is available once the device has booted. if anyone is interested here is a little hw info-

# cat /proc/cmdline
console=ttyS1,57600n8 root=/dev/ram0

It seems like a good candidate for hacking to me. It's got an unpopulated USB-A header that looks like it's missing two resistors, a polyfuse and a cap (has a couple SMD spots between ground connections too.. not sure why)

the ground fill around the serial header is solid which makes it a little tough. I had to use my hot air to pre-heat it then my iron to solder the wires in. If anyone wants additional info or has recommendations just post a followup in this thread

There is no use in trying firmwares for other routers, the 639GR v2 needs its own unique build and so does the v1.

Accex NR22/Y does not have the Realtek 8366SR gigabit switch that the 639v1 has, and doesn't have the Atheros switch that the v2 has.

If I were to download the source and recompile my own version it'd make sense to start with a kernel config that appears to be almost working though, correct?

I think I'm getting that offset error due to improper settings in linux/drivers/mtd/maps and I've got the ralink-flash.h and ralink-flash.c from the default TrendNET linux build (2.6.21). I added the target to the Makefile but I seem to be missing a Kconfig in the DD-WRT sources. I'm not sure if I'm heading in the right direction or if I'm completely off... any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I could probably donate a TEW-639GR v2 if it would help to get a working DD-WRT build for this router created. Whom should I send it to? Cool

Check the wiki for instructions on where to send it. http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/community/donations

Also, newegg just listed some of these refurbished for 23.99 after the discount code EMCNHHG44

It doesn't say if it is a V1 or V2 but since its a refub it could be a V1.

If anyone gets one of these I recommend a heatsink for the switch since I bet thats what they fixed due to my switch overheating.

According to wikidevi.com this the Edimax BR-6574n has the same SoC, switch and radio chips.

Anybody ever get this working? I'd like to order this router asap for a friend since it's $25 shipped on NewEgg right now.

Hello,

Are there any follow up for this router ?

I have the V3.0R which has a Realtek RTL8198 CPU (according to https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TRENDnet_TEW-639GR_V3.0R ), which is different from the V1 and V2, hence my little hope of seeing a compatible version Question

Thanks for the answers Wink
