I want to access my USB drive from my router with DD-WRT over the internet from anywhere, like a personal cloud.
I set up a free DDNS service from freedns.afraid.org: shapiro.mooo.com
I also have USB support enabled in DD-WRT and Samba server for NAS. I do not have automatic drive mount enabled but I can access my USB drive over my local network, so I believe it's fine.
When I navigate to that address (shapiro.mooo.com) it takes me to the main DD-WRT screen to log into my router settings. I don't know if it's supposed to do that or if I have some setting screwed up.
How do I make it so I can map the USB drive on my tablet and work pc and access it anywhere?
You could enable FTP access in DD-WRT. This way you can avoid setting up VPN - However it maybe somewhat more insecure compared to VPN.
FTP is built into Windows Explorer, so if you setup a shortcut, you'll be able to access your data from anywhere using the URL: ftp://username:password@shapiro.mooo.com

what tool (program) are you using?
Different programs tend to use different ports. Like:
- web - port 80
- ftp - ports 20+21
- samba/explorer (netBIOS) - ports ? I think 135,136,137 or something like that.

You are probably using your browser (uses port 80)

You are probably thinking about using samba/explorer, as in network neighbourhood
You should note, that when you open samba to the entire internet, it becomes easier for anyone to access your network/files.
You should also note that most port based protocols (http, ftp, netBOIS (samba) ) uses no encryption for neither passwords or data, so anyone sniffing your traffic, can see the contents of your files - and your username/password.
This is why setting up a VPN is often used. VPN creates an encrypted tunnel for all the ports.
It may be possible to add encryption to the port based protocols, like:
ftp -> (becomes) sftp
http -> https
telnet -> ssh
