r25251 works great on my D-Link; r25273 leads to a reboot but w/o update. After reboot it's always r25251.

Perhaps I am underestimating you but you are using the dir615h-ddwrt-webflash.bin file to upgrade and not the dlink-dir615h-factory-webflash.bin file?

Reason I ask. I have gotten into the habit of downloading both for archiving. Recently I picked the wrong one (in my case the dlink-dir615d-factory-webflash.bin) and the whole upgrade process appeared to be working except that after a reboot, the router still reported the old firmware version. Very much as you are reporting.

The factory-webflash is only for upgrading from original manufacturers firmware. Once DD-WRT has been installed, you must use the ddwrt-webflash.bin.

If you've already been doing that correctly, feel free to call me an idiot. I'm pretty old so I can always fall back on that as an excuse Smile

Hallo Over50_2ConnectedKids,
never would do that ,calling you an idiot for posting a reply, (me over 60 also 2 connKids!).
You're absolutly right: upgrading from DLink-FW to DD-WRT you use the factory-webflash-FW; from one DD-WRT to another you take the ddwrt-webflash-FW. And that's what I did: upgrading from ddwrt to ddwrt. In the past I noticed more than once tha the router seemed to upgrade but only for few seconds; after the reboot nothing changed.

Guys... may I call you so ? --- I'm not that young either Wink --- during the last 2 weeks or so I've tried basically all newer firmwares from 23919 onwards on 2 routers: DIR-615 D2 and WNDR3800.
My conclusion: all firmwares of the form 24xyz and most of the firmwares after 25179 are a big mess. I don't want to generalize, but this is my experience with these 2 routers.

The last three firmwares that seem more stable and without strange bugs are: 23919, 25143 and 25179.

aggreed!
I stayed for a long time with r23503. After having bricked my DIR-615 rev. H1, I didn't have nerve enough to test newer ones. I only started to upgrade again when I read that r25251 works; r25273 doesn't fortunately without bricking, r25279 does.

I've flashed my 615 H2 from 23503 to 25279 when i read that ervau had success with 25251 and 25279.

Unfortunately, these builds still seem to be flawed. Directly after flashing and rebooting, the firmware works fine (except for "Disable Wireless GUI Access" which still does nothing at all). I can setup my DHCP range, WiFi, DynDNS, SSH etc and everything's ok UNTIL i reboot the router.
After rebooting, i can't access the internet or the internal router ip anymore, can't ping or wifi or ssh it, the only thing left working seems to be the dhcp server as i still can release and renew my computer's ip address.

This happens with both 25251 and 25279, it doesn't matter how long you wait until rebooting or which setting you change before rebooting, after the first reboot the router is not accessible anymore.

Had to enter recovery mode and flash the original D-Link firmware to get back online, now i'm back on good old 23503.

This "softbricking" has also been observed on DIR-615 D2 and D4 for all firmwares beyond 25179. I'm running 25179 on my DIR-615 D2 and for the last 4 days it's been very stable. Any firmware beyond this and it's bricked after a reboot. See this ticket:

Thanks for the notice about "softbricking", didn't knew this word and behaviour before.

@Devs:

Don't know if it's important or related to this issue, just an observation: with 25251 and 25279 the NVRAM usage right after flashing and reboot is ~16 of 64KB. After leaving the router alone for the whole night, NVRAM usage was 18 KB before i rebooted and got the softbrick.
Now i'm back @ 23503 and the NVRAM is at 20 out of 64KB.

This 'softbricking' is now also observed on a D-Link DIR-615 D1 with any fw release from 25203 to 25309.

Did you ever try 23919 ? I can't remember if it bricks the DIR-615 D versions or not... I do know that a couple of builds after 23503 did brick, so I didn't try again until 25143 came out and read a report about it being fine. The last one which works at the moment seems to be 25179.
