I have a stock Netgear N300/WNR3500L, and I just flashed dd-wrt.v24-21061_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk to it using the web interface. I did a triple 30 reset as well.

It seems to work fine, and is up and running.

However, upgrading to dd-wrt.v24-21153_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin doesn't work. I'm using the Firmware Upgrade tab in the web interface. It seems to do what it should: It uploads the bin file, tells me to wait 299 seconds and reboots.

When it comes up, it's still the same old firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (03/25/13) mini (SVN revision 21061).

Why doesn't the firmware upgrade stick?

OK, I managed to install the "std-usb-nas" image instead.

I noticed that when installing "std-usb-nas", the "please wait" counter went down to about 250 before the "Upgrade successful. Unit is rebooting now." message appeared.

With the "big" image, the counter only went to 295 before the "Upgrade successful" message came. Which is weird, since the "big" image is larger than the "std-usb-nas" image.

So, I guess there's something wrong with the "big" images? At least for the WNR3500L with the 21061 and 21153 releases?

Nothing wrong with 21153-big but it doesn't fit in an 8MB flash based Netgear.

OK, thanks.

I guess the documentation should be updated. Here's what the wiki at http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNR3500L says:

Also, the WNR3500L has an 8MB flash and 64MB RAM so it will run even the "Big" builds with room to spare. Don't hesitate to use at least the "Standard-USB-FTP" build.

Written at a time when "big" was 6.5-7MB in size..
It has grown and does no longer fit in a Netgear which has 64-128KB less free space than other 8MB flash sized routers.

Thanks for all your answers!

I was thinking about upgrading again, but I see that the std-usb-nas build has been removed from ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2014/02-19-2014-r23598/broadcom_K26/

Do I need to go for the "mini" build instead? What would I lose with the mini build?

And is there a reason not to try the broadcom_K3X builds instead?

Can you be more specific about the space loss in the netgear wnr3500l v1? Just how many bytes of space are available?

I just upgraded my WNR3500L from a previous dd-wrt release without any problems.

I used this "big" build: ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2014/12-15-2014-r25648/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-25648_NEWD-2_K2.6_big.bin

It's 7240K and fits on the device (unlike my previous try with a "big" release which was 7660K)

Just FYI: A couple of weeks ago I reverted back to the stock Netgear firmware after having struggled with slightly flaky WiFi performance for months (years?). It feels much better now! E.g. my chromecast doesn't lose connection when idling anymore.
