your laptop only has 10/100 and not gigabit, but it has wireless N, are you using an external adapter?

I was getting 55 Megabits with 26138 doing file transfers across my network and I use the worst spot in my house for testing, I'm pretty happy with that.

I recently upgraded to an Archer C7 on OpenWRT BB and it improved by about 25%.

I think you are doing OK.

Are you 100% you don't have any B/G devices connecting as it will bring down your throughput.

openwrt does not have wifi bugs fixed, or hardly any driver bugs fixed, that whole swconfig thing several need? apparently its from openwrt & made its way here..

100mbps is pushing it for the cpu in the 1043nd v1, which the router as a whole is slow old, pre-802.11n & buggy..a v2 would be night & day & is very cheap

thies are the bug fixes

9654, 12372 and 13966. Fixed in 14.07
all are wifi slow down or stoping everything i read that you post instead of helping find somthing to get the wr1043nd v1.8 working the best fix is a trash can or get another router.
