I know from that post that it's going to involve some work. I'm willing to do the testing on my unit, but I need some help as far as how to go about the process. So far I opened up my router and determined that it is basically a rebranded Alpha Networks WRG-AC16 http://www.alphanetworks.com/_english/01_product/01_detail.php?pid=206&ffid=22&appid=63 based on the silkscreening on the board and the listing of the OEM.
I believe I've found the location of the JTAG and serial connections on the board and am about to order a adapter cable, but I'll need some help making sure I'm putting the right wires in the right places and getting the info needed to make this all work.
I look forward to collaborating with the community here to bring support to this device. Let me know what information I can provide or what I can do to move it forward.

Just trying to get a feel for if anyone would be able to help me with this or if I'm out of luck and should just buy a different router or use different firmware.

Went ahead and dropped this on a 880l this morning. So far initial set up has gone well, was able to upload the ddwrt base firmware directly from the "choose file" dialog in upgrade firmware, then upgraded from base ddwrt to the 880 specific firmware. It did take a little bit (maybe 2 minutes) for the wireless SSID to broadcast properly, but other than that everything appears to be ok.
I'll update back here if I have any issues to let folks know.
I would be interested to hear whether your 5Ghz wireless throughput is impacted after installation.
I tried this out a couple of weeks ago and throughput was poor compared to stock (around 40Mbps).
I'd made sure I'd done the 30-30-30 reset.
I went back to the (very limited) stock firmware and my throughout was restored.
Sorry to ask this but is there any progress on a stable release? I bought the DIR-880L and I am stunned by how shallow the stock firmware is (I been using DD-WRT for years now), thinking about selling it unless a stable release of this magnificent OS is coming out soon
