I had a router that I had flashed with dd-wrt, but the wifi died, so now I ordered an 890L. There are a few questions I have before I flash it. What is the best dd-wrt version to put on it. I looked in the hardware section for my router, but couldn't find it, so what is the procedure to flash this particular model.
As for flashing procedure, power off router, press and hold down reset button while powering on. The power LED should blink slowly. The router should now be in the cfe miniweb recovery.
Configure static IP 192.168.0.2 for your computer and connect to router LAN port with cable.
Ping the router at 192.168.0.1. You should get ttl=100.
Point browser (chrome is good) to 192.168.0.1 and upload the factory-to-ddwrt file you downloaded earlier. When the firmware has finished uploading, router will reboot and your browser will lose connection to the 192.168.0.1 site. It's OK because dd-wrt default IP is 192.168.1.1. Change IP of PC back to dhcp and point browser to 192.168.1.1. Should see the dd-wrt set password page. _________________

Then wait, and wait longer; after 10min (watch the LED actions to gauge later updates completion), go to 192.168.1.1 and you should get a DD-wrt splash screen to set a password. Do that, then go to Administration -> Factory Defaults -> Restore Factory Defaults...and reset again, then flash the dir890-webflash.bin file. Finally, set up everything as desired (Save saves the setting across pages; Apply applies the saved changes; crazy I know .

There's some driver changes between them. If you want to see more detailed changelog, there's a sticky thread by KrypteX at the top of this forum.
Try 28211 first. If you encounter some problem, then try 27858 to see if they go away. _________________

Thanks again. I'll have the router by tomorrow night and will let you know how it turns out (by Wednesday if not sooner).
Didn't go very well. Flashed 28211 a few times but never could get WAN connectivity. I had taken screenshots of my old settings, but it was confusing going from a Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS running dd-wrt v24-sp2 (08/12/10) std To the D-Link DIR 890L. Running on stock firmware for now until I can get this figured out.
Kind of in the same boat. Got the 890L on the Black Friday sale here. Will do the flashing to DD-WRT later today or maybe tomorrow.
Read somewhere that it is best to use the version listed in the database (26653) first and once that is done update to one of the newer versions. I might go for that approach. Will post here once I'm done for future reference to others.
Well that worked just fine. I now have build 28397 in mine. Might move on to a newer one later. Anyone have ideas on how high one can go on the TX Power and still be safe from cooking the router? I am not having the best reception in all of my flat

I did the up date to a newer firmware 28 something but power light stays red and the only other light that is working is the internet light wich shows correct is this normal?
The preformance of the router is good everything is working i have been useing several days now

It's the same for me.
The 2 USB LEDs at the bottom do work if you enable USB core and sharing so it's just the wireless LEDs that don't turn on. They do work if you manually issue gpio commands though. _________________
