after so much reading, and at the risk of being ignored or perhaps verbally thrashed, perma-banned and having my birthday taken away, ive still got to ask. the wiki says one thing, but the threads i read are full of users saying to use trailed k3.x builds for the final flash? if the wiki is gospel in a sea of conflicting info, why does it say to use the non-trailed build?

There are some finicky routers (like some older Asus routers) where a trailed build is (reportedly) required to upgrade to K3X from DD K26. Even the wiki for my wndr4500v2 states to use an old k26 build for initial flash, but I flashed mine yesterday from OEM software, direct to the latest k3x .chk file.
Anyway, in general and for the e1200v2, the trailed build is only needed for initial flash, and the nv64k can be used for upgrades thereafter, including for k3x. I use it for my e1500 & wndr4000. But as ian5142 alluded, the trailed build still works; it is only a slight difference in size due to the header information, so it is viewed as "safer".

E1200v2 can use nv64 builds. Works well on all older ddwrt builds and probably still works on newer.....
but to have less trouble running k3.x builds you should install build with 'e1200v2' in name.
I haven't intalled on any of my e1200v2 in long time and they are not in use but they seemed to work ok with ddwrt when I used them however 'shibby tomato' firmware for the e1200v2 was probably easier to deal with and worked great for the E1200v2.
