I've been having problems lately with my wired computers losing their IP addresses at random intervals. Now, this has usually been a problem with my wireless devices, and I've grown used to having to reboot every hour or two to get an IP again, but now the wired devices are doing this as well sometimes.

On my ubuntu server, I have to go to the console and ifdown/ifup eth0 to get an IP because I can't connect to the machine and ifconfig shows no IP for eth0. Once I do the ifdown/ifup, everything is fine again until it happens again. Could be an hour, could be a couple days, but it does happen again.

Now I wonder if something is just up with the DHCP server on the router because, if this is the same issue, has been happening to my wireless connections for a long time now.

I was looking at the logs on my wired server, and came up with:

Code:
Feb 24 12:04:30 server dhclient: bound to 192.168.1.5 -- renewal in 228 seconds.
Feb 24 12:08:18 server dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 192.168.1.1 port 67
Feb 24 12:08:57 server last message repeated 3 times
Feb 24 12:10:11 server last message repeated 4 times
Feb 24 12:11:00 server last message repeated 3 times
Feb 24 12:12:07 server last message repeated 4 times
Feb 24 12:13:10 server last message repeated 4 times
Feb 24 12:13:17 server dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
Feb 24 12:13:49 server last message repeated 2 times
Feb 24 12:14:17 server last message repeated 3 times
Feb 24 12:14:32 server dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 7
Feb 24 12:14:39 server dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 9
Feb 24 12:14:48 server dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 11
Feb 24 12:14:59 server dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 14
Feb 24 12:15:13 server dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 15
Feb 24 12:15:28 server dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 5
Feb 24 12:15:28 server dhclient: DHCPOFFER from 192.168.1.1
Feb 24 12:15:28 server dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
Feb 24 12:15:28 server dhclient: DHCPACK from 192.168.1.1
Feb 24 12:15:28 server dhclient: bound to 192.168.1.5 -- renewal in 278 seconds.

which seems to indicate that it's not getting any kind of response from the DHCP server (the router) for an extended period of time.

I can tell you without even reading your post that no one is going to help you when you are running a version that is way out of date. The last final release was v23SP2. You need to update. Most likely your problem will be fixed by simply updating. Just make sure you read the wiki and do it right.

I just upgraded to v23 sp2 last night, so I'm in the process of testing it out. Nothing to report yet, but I'll post back here if I do have troubles!

One thing I can say is that the interface is much improved!

However, the QoS has been locking up my router whenever I enable it. I suppose I'll just go without for now.
