DD-WRT version: 2.3 SP3 date: 02 Mar 2007
After updating to 2.3 SP3 r6096, flashing function is broken (always failed.) and when I restore nvrambak.bin, it bricks. It flashs power led all the time.

How can I debrick it?
All methods except JTAG flashing were tried with no luck.

jtag would really fix that problem, no doubt:) probably you restored settings then before the router completely reboots (in a minute or two) you did a powercycle. anyways, just clear the nvram on that by jtag, most probably that is just what it takes to debrick it:D

you mentioned, you were using v23sp3 right? sp3 right now is on beta stage, meaning, there may or may not have some bugs for it. i would recommend the final releases, sp1 or sp2:)

good luck:D

Then I need to solder the JTAG headers on the board.
I got a question on making JTAG cable.
Is that OK not connecting Pin 1 and Pin 2?

yes you need to solder the jtag headers on the board.
i even soldered the wiress directly to the headers coz i couldnt find any jtag "plug or whatever"... got the headers from an old mobo:)

in making a jtag you gotta follow the hairydairymaid jtag schematics. pin 1 and p2 are connected...to the ground

Pin 2 is ground......pin 1 is not used. If you connect pin 1 to ground, you'll have problems. I use both 2 and 6 for ground, and 3, 5, 7 and 9 for TDI, TDO, TMS and TCK respectively. Read the schematics again.

ive emailed hairydairymaid about this:

i used hairydairymaid's debrick software but got a little trouble understanding with the illustration on the pdf file. so i made some search and i found this >>>

http://wiki.openwrt.org/OpenWrtDocs/Customizing/Hardware/JTAG_Cable

a much more clear diagram for me on what pin/s on the jtag to the db25.

where it pin1 and pin2 on the jtag are ground on pins 18-25 of the db25...

i cleared the nvram and it worked. pin1 on the db25 however is not used.

I want to connect JTAG pin 4,6 to pin 20, 25 of db-25 because I want to modify a old 25pin com port cable(9pin) with db25 female connector to JTAG cable.

Huh?? Sounds like the long way around the door to get in the barn. I sell high quality cables with software, utilities and INSTRUCTIONS for $10 plus shipping. Just a thought.

I made the cable and I will solder the header later, hope it works.
BTW how can I flash other version of DD-WRT through JTAG? Thanks.

old school way works shorting the pins too for v5 andv 6 ... I believe the pins changed but it is somewhere in the neighborhood of pin 15&16......

Do this while wired to your router:

1. have linksys's tftp client ready to tftp a good known version of ddwrt... sp2 is fine. 192.168.1.1 is generally the address to use unless you had configured it otherwise before it bricked

2. go to run open up cmd and run a ping -n 192.168.1.1 with a static ip address configured on your desktop.

3. Short the pins. Once you get a response from router via ping send tftp.

I have only met one router out of hundreds that was bricked using this method and jtag didn't even pull that one out.

28/02 build is fine.

after I cleared nvram, I can reflash it through TFTP.

Most of time spended on soldering cable and header.
I don't solder pin1-2 on the board so that my 10-pin connector can connect to JTAG.
I only use $0.3 for buying a header. My old modified 25-pin COM port cable works. Wink
