I've read a lot of announcements and the Wiki but I can't wrap my head around it. This is my situation:

I have bought a WRT-160N v3 (corerev 17). It already has this firmware installed:

DD-WRT v24-sp2 (01/02/10) mini - build 13575M NEWD-2 K2.6 Eko

It came like that. https-access to the administration web interface doesn't work. Otherwise it seems to operate but I haven't used it a lot, because I need it to run OpenVPN before I can use it.

After a 30/30/30-reset I do not find a Linksys Management Mode page but only DD-WRT asking me to set a new password. I have tried the trick from the Wiki
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT150N_%26_WRT160N#Linksys_Management_Mode_on_some_WRT160N_v3_routers_when_the_30.2F30.2F30_doesn.27t_work
but it didn't bring the Management Mode up either.

These are my questions:

1.) Do I really need the Management Mode Reboot? Or is a normal reboot from the DD-WRT web interface enough?

2.) The Announcement in this forum recommends biuld 14929. Several warnings in Wiki and the forum instruct to only use Firmware with "wrt-160n" in the file name. However, I have not been able to find a vpn-version with "wrt-160n" in the file name.

Can I use dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn_small.bin ?

Or what else?

Thank you!

no you don't need managements mode and no you can't use that firmware. you need a K26 firmware. ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn_small.bin will work.

Great, that's the same one I wanted to install. Smile

Great, it works! And OpenVPN works as well.

HTTPS access to the web interface for DD-WRT ist still not possible.

Is that a known issue?

i think so. i've never gotten HTTPS to work since it's a bad certificate.

With other DD-WRT-Routers I have a warning "bad certificate", but if I accept that I can use it. That's OK.

With this model I don't get anything - if I try https://192.168.1.1 it times out.

Originally I had set https only - I had to do a 30/30/30 reset because I was not able to connect to the management web interface any more.

I don't get it - aren't those EXACTLY the same firmwares? I can't see a difference in the filename at all:

dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn_small.bin
dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn_small.bin

Also, the setup page over at StrongVPN (http://www.strongvpn.com/setup_dd-wrt_openvpn_manual.shtml) seems to indicate an "advanced settings" option on the DD-WRT OpenVPN client config page, but I can't seem to find it. I would like to try later versions of the same firmware to see if that will work with StrongVPN. At this point I can't get the firmware above to work with StrongVPN (and there's no SSH option on that firmware to use their alternate installation).

Any suggestions? Could we use the latest build that follows that nomenclature?

dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn_small.bin
(ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24-K26/svn18946/dd-wrt.v24-18946_NEWD-2_K2.6_openvpn_small.bin)

Thanks.
