Hello, I have searched this forum and the web, and cannot find a suitable answer. I would like to just update the linux kernel on my WRT54G running DD-WRT v24 RC6.2. Is there a relatively simple way to do this?

simple is a subjective term. What is simple for you might be extremely difficult for someone else.

How much programming experience do you have?

Should have specified. I don't have much programming experience but I've done Linux kernel compiling.

The filesystem is read only. So you will have to create a new firmware binary with the new kernel compiled into it. It doesn't sound like an easy task, especially since all of the source/scripts are not available.

What kernel version is in RC6.2? And what do you wish to update to?

I think pre-RC7 uses 2.4.30, which is relatively recent afaik.

I think RC 6.2 is using kernel 2.6.16. Where can I download the pre7s? That would be much easier than modifying the firmware for me. I'm just concerned with a security flaw in the 2.6.16 kernel. I want to update to at least 2.6.17 so if the pre-RC7 are using a newer kernel than that it would be perfect. Thanks in advance for your replies.

They are here:

EDIT-

I guess it's actually 2.4.35 in RC7.

You can check kernel version in your build with uname -r command.
