This is generally the tone, however most of the newest router are all using Atheros, Broadcom Soc Based Router seems to have disappeared..

I am wondering if that is case?

Forget Atheros! Go to Broadcom and be happy! This is what I did after spend a lot of time trying to config my DIR-825 with DD-WRT to expand my wireless signal.

have to agree here, iv had nothing but unreliability when it comes to atheros wireless and dd-wrt.

my old broadcom units work flawlessly in professional environments using dd-wrt however.

however openwrt and atheros works wonders, its the ath9k driver, since you can use madwifi with openwrt but ath9k is the only approach for stability.

+1 on that.. I've stopped using dd-wrt ever since I bought my WHR-HP-G300N. It worked terribly, so unfortunately I've reverted back to Buffalo's stock firmware. But dd-wrt used to work really well on my old Broadcom-based WHR-G125.

slybunda: I've thought about going for OpenWRT but it seems that it doesn't come with a user-friendly GUI (too much effort to do everything in command-line) and I'm not sure if it supports my router yet... Any directions that you could point me in?

Even though I'm no longer using dd-wrt I've made a mental note to myself to visit this place on occasion to check if the devs become enlightened and change their position on not supporting the ath9k driver If that happens I will definitely give dd-wrt another spin.

What is wrong with you people? Broadcom is nothing but problems problems PROBLEMS. I have yet to own or EVEN SEE a modern Broadcom router function properly with DD-WRT. Even simple things like TX/RX rate, site survey etc aren't even working properly in Broadcom.

I would think from the ever piling of posts like this, that broadcom is pretty well established, pretty much all 3rd party firmware supports its chipset, its also the reason there even is 3rd party firmware, while Atheros is still pretty new into the game, so it will take time for it to mature.

not atheros's fault. its the madwifi driver that has better broadcom support.

and do note that its the older broadcom hardware that works well, the latest stuff on the market has a lot of issues.

also if you read up on madwifi site they say that the ath9k driver is whats replaced madwifi for long term use.

ath9k driver is only for atheros hardware, no broadcom support.

Its understandable that older broadcom hardware is better supported its been around longer.

Atheros is catching up fast but is going to have issues for a time tell the bugs are ironed out just like it was for the older broadcom units back then.

Also i never said Atheros was bad chip, just said its new in the game and will take some time to mature, I actually like their radios and believe they are very powerful, but like everything, it'll take time.
