Some years back I was moving my Buffalo whr-hp-g54 router and some lan switches. When setting things up at the new location, I accidentally plugged in the wrong power supply into my router. I only noticed my mistake when smoke started pouring out off the router.
After rescuing the router it would not work even with its own power supply. It was completely dead. No lights no boot up.
So I went out and bought another router and packed away this one. So today I decide I'll need to do the SD card hack and I pull out the fried router to practice on, since its the same model as my current one.
Lo and behold, it now works! Not complaining, just amazed. Wondered if this kind of thing happens. I believe I put the router away after it cooled but anyway now I have another router!

If you pass a voltage surge to an electrolitic capacitor, it may explode with smoke and acid smell.
Maybe the electroconductive liquid behave like a short circuit or something, and after several days it dry and allow functioning again. If that´s the case, you should replace it. _________________ If you want support, please read first the announcements and forum rules.
