Hi,

I bought two TL-WR740N (Hardware v2.1) then I did the firmware update with the following dd-wrt image in this order:

1) http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/TP-Link/WR740N/2.0/factory-to-ddwrt.bin/3841

2) http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/TP-Link/WR740N/2.0/tl-wr740n-webflash.bin/3842

When the firmaware update was completed I can connect, configure and use the device through its IP 192.168.1.1, all works fine.

Looking at dd-wrt config web page I realize that I've the standard version, but what I would are the voip features (Asterisk and OpenSER or Opensips or Milkfish).
So I found this dd-wrt version:

ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24_FINAL-NEWD/dd-wrt.v24-9517_NEWD_voip.bin

After I update the device with above firmare it doesn't boot anymore!

At this point the only way to recover the device from the wrong update is that I should connect to its serial port to try a tftp update with the previous firmware.

The problem is that I do not found the serial port. To do it I follow these pages but they referrer a differt hardware version:

http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/TP-LINK_TL-WR841ND

and

http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr741nd#serial

The questions are:

1) What firmware version include voip for TL-WR740N ?

2) How can I discover the serial port on this device ?

In order to help who give me an hint, I attached hi-res photos of the board TL-WR740N (Hardware v2.1)

Please help...

A1) None
A2) WR741ND ver. 2
For this new revision its TP4→Tx and TP5→Rx in the center of PCB. On Chipset AR7240 they are pins 86→Rx and 87→Tx.

fyi2000 thank you for your quick reply!

Just another question for all novice like me:

Where do I should connect Gnd and Vcc (3.3 V) ?

I have this Serial Adapter to interface PC:

Ask checho to help you. Basically I think you can find the GND and Vcc (3.3V) from the flash chip but there must be other contacts which are much easier to solder.

The square golden contact around the AR9285 radio chip is GND. Find the Vcc some where else because you don't want to mess up with the flash chip.

Hi fyi2000,

today I connect the serial adapter to the board with no luck. HyperTerminal doesn't shows nothing.
I've soldered the TX, RX and GND on the bottom of the board. For the VCC 3, I got it from the flash chip, I really didn't found any other source for this, all others power sources are less of 1 V.

About the failure of my try, may be the serial adapter and the serial cable I'm using.

So, can I ask you to check if this serial adapter is good for operation?

http://www.microbot.it/documents/mr002-001_datasheet.pdf

Also, what kind of serial cable I should use?

In the past I already use this products to connect to other routers without problems.

ps. are there some other possibility that cause a wrong connection?

It should work if you provide at least 3V to its VCC which is needed for the MAX3232.
  • Did you crossover TX/RX of the board to RX/TX of the serial adapter?
  • How much voltage did you measure from the VCC (pin8) of the flash?
  • Did you measure TX voltage variation of the board during boot?

Maybe you should add resistor (100 ohm?) between TP4/TP5 and the serial adapter.

ok, I got connected with TX/RX crossed!

FYI, on the board I measure these values:

Pin 8 Flash VCC = 3.32
TX = while booting it's variable from 2.42 to 2.48
RX = while booting it's variable from 2.99 to 3.01

This is the serial output:

Code:

U-Boot 1.1.4 (Sep  3 2010 - 12:28:13)

After last line (Resetting...) it go ahead with a new boot.

At this point I'm lost! How do I stop U-boot and getting a console to do all required by a debrick procedure (wget, tftp, and so on...)

I think you pick the wrong router. You should get a TL-WR1043ND or TL-MR3220/TL-MR3420.

Do it at your own risk.

fyi2000 thanks for links.

USB is a challenge but I'd try.

As soon as I did it, I'll post all info here.

Thank you
