Can anyone tell me what this is and if it can be replaced?

Mod edit: Come on Malachi....that image is way too big and breaks the forum rules as it screws up formatting....resize and replace if necessary.

Sorry Murrkf. I wanted it to be big enough for someone to be able to tell what it was.

Mod edit2: it's okay but doesn't really help to screw up the formatting on this board so they can't also read your question! People with large monitors don't see how bad this is for those who use small monitors.

Hi Mal, it is a capacitor. From the looks of it's placement it is being used for noise suppression on perhaps a 5vdc buss. The pinout for the ic next to it would confirm.

Is the 7000 it's in functional? If it is indeed on the 5v buss it's failure could indicate a more serious issue.

Yes it is replaceable with the proper tools and skills to do so without damaging the board.

If it's dead you could sell it to me for dissection. Razz

It's strange I don't see any clues to indicate how it broke.

Dave

No power to it at all. I have another r7000 that has the same problem but on it the leds come on at least.
I,was thinking of unsoldering one that looks like the same size from the one that doesn't power up and soldering it to the one that does.
Is that feasible? Or can those be purchased somewhere?

Do you think I can solder it using the same iron I use for serial and jtag?

If you have two units with the same cap popped you have bigger problems. I't's indicative of an internal voltage regulator failure which could have been brought on by a bad power supply.

If you are careful you should be able to wipe that cap off the board and have it function without it provided the regulators haven't been blown.

Sending a pm with my phone number.

One unit had the heatsink pad for the cpu displaced causing the cpu to overheat and literally explode.
Permanent crispy critter.

Still waiting for power supply and antennas for the other.

Wow. I didn't think to look there. That's the one that didn't power up?

Yes, I didn't attempt to power it up myself. I used an ohm meter to check the power circuits and found them shorted. I then went looking for the short.
