Did OpenVPN server and client work?

.... everything is a bit exaggerated Embarassed

i didnt tested the OpenVPN server/client because I desperately need a PPTP solution. Sad

Is it possible to fix this in the future Question

I just got OpenVPN and PPTP working just fine with instructions from my VPN provider. However, I couldn't get OpenVPN working using the Startup Script - I had to manually set it up. PPTP was slow but worked the first time I tried to set it up. Search the web for "vpn instructions dd-wrt pptp" and you'll see many guides. I hope it works for you.

I've got an old WNDR-4500 v1 laying around that hasn't been fired up for a year or so. I just did the latest netgear firmware update thru the router upgrade and did a reset as instructed by netgear. I'm now running V1.0.1.40_1.0.68

My question is I want to give this router to my friend who isn't tech savy, just needs a new router/wifi. Should I leave the stock firmware on or is there any benefit to doing this latest build of DDWRT?

Thanks guys!

If he isn't tech savvy leave it on stock.

I was having a weird issue that might not have actually been an issue in the first place. Ended up reflashing and reflashing and tftping and finally resolved it. Post has been edited because it was boring and not helpful for any passerbyers. Move along. Nothing to see here. Smile

@jf555

Have you tested a new build with the 4500v1? The report about 29002 was simply impressive and this build works for me very good ... no need to change - but I'm interessted in further versions Very Happy

Do you guys load the BIN file before you make any changes or start from scratch? Using the 20092 on a v1.

If upgrading to a newer build, you should GUI reset after flashing. Fwiw, I've not reset my v2 since flashing 26138 (see earlier posts).

I flashed my 4500 v1 with the 26138 build and upgraded to the recommended Kong build 25015-SP1 from the wiki page
(http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_WNDR4500#Initial_DD-WRT_Installation)

If I want to flash to 29002 do I still have to follow the 30-30-30 process? Is the 29002 better, more stable than the Kong build I currently have? Or should I go straight for the latest one, 29519?

Thanks for your advice!

I haven't used a 30-30-30 reset for a long time; only GUI resets. I would use 26138 as the minimum (followed by a GUI reset), then use it a few days before trying newer builds. It's a Peacock recommended build. However, do not reset if using newer builds, at least until you've tested it a while; and check the changelog and 'new build' threads.

I have not done a reset since 26138, as I have lots of wireless issues if I do (last I checked at least). Air-Time Fairness was enabled by default after 26138, and later disabled again in 29048. But in my testing, disabling ATF after a reset didn't fix my wireless issues, hence why I still haven't tried a reset since...

Fwiw, I've been updating for most of the recent builds; only had issues with 29440. I just updated my WNDR4500v2 to 29519 last night; was fine after 5 hours. [Update: I've seen the 5GHz drop a few times tonight; didn't see that on 29409 (used it for a week) and prior. Time to try a reset, then if no love, revert back to 26138, reset, then 29409...] I'd suggest you flash 26138, GUI reset, manually set up, then use it at least for a few days before trying newer builds.

I'm gonna try just doing a GUI reset. I was on 26138 for a while and then flashed with Kong 25015 which is what I'm on now. But because of the reset I lost all my settings and had to enter them again. Thanks for the advice, jwh7.

I actually have a WNDR4500v1 and WNDR4500v2 that have been running dd-wrt for a while(6-12months) and I am running them in client mode to connect to my existing router that is using stock netgear firmware(R6300v2) and it has been doing perfect!

The build I am using is 27506.

Does anyone have a newer recommended build?

Hi peeps!

Long-time DD-WRT user since the 54GL, first-time poster! I'm currently running DD-WRT v3.0-r29396 giga (04/04/16) on my WNDR4500v2.

What's the current state of *ware on this router? I got this router a few weeks ago and was hoping to setup hplips/Google Cloud print (ref), USB storage with transmission and maybe Python so I could run some of my own code on it.

I found this page as well, but from what I've read in various places optware is very out of date.

So it seems I need to look into an alternative. My question is which of the following I should look into for my needs:

* OTRW2
* opkg
* entware
* dd-ware(?)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Very Happy

Edit: Added firmware version.

Well, I tried the entware install as stated on the entware-ng github wiki, but I get a permissions error :/ It looks as though a few other people have run into this but nobody has come up with a solution. Could anyone give me some advice?

Code:

/opt/bin/opkg is definitely there, but I can't run it even after chmod +x, which seems weird. I wondered whether maybe my drive wasn't mounted properly, so here it is in my mount output:

Code:
/dev/sda1 on /opt type ext2 (rw,relatime,errors=continue)

Edit: Same behaviour on Kong 25015-SP1 too.
