First I have upgraded the device to original FW XM-v5.5.build12536.bin
Then I tried the TFTP Update:
..\Firmware\Ubiquiti\DD_WRT>tftp -i 192.168.1.20 put 14144_NS5M-DD-WRT.bin
Übertragung erfolgreich: 6947160 Bytes in 13 Sekundens, 534396 Bytes/s
Seemed to have worked. But...
It didn't work as described, I had to keep pressed the Reset Button < 10 sec. and issue the tftp command within ~ 2 seconds after releasing it, this was successful at every third attempt.
I have also tried 14896_NS5M-DD-WRT.bin plus one more versions. No success.
I am stuck now. Even if the message for TFTP reports a successful file transfer, 192.168.1.20 keeps on responding to ping. The IP of 192.168.1.1 never responds. I have waited at least 20 min, more than once!
The only access I still have is: ping 192.168.1.20.
Web access fails. Ping only works having pressed the reset button before power on. Otherwise no answer to ping.
The LEDs are on like that: red + orange blinking alternating. LAN flashing green + Power LED solid green.
Before I lost Web access I've also tried to do a firmware upgrade using: 13654_ns5m-webflash-firmware.bin.
Error message: "invalid format". For all webflash firmware files.

I have tried the latest beta at first. 14896_NS5M-DD-WRT.bin
I always try the most recent one at first, i.e. the first one in the drop down list.
I'll try again (tomorrow). Basically it's quite tricky to hit the return key for the tftp command so that it does not terminate with timeout. Whenever this had worked though, I left it running much longer than the recommended 7-10 min. Longest trial time was some hours overnight.
I'll try again the latest beta and will report then.
I have flashed successfully many devices (> 50) of type Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 (Broadcom) with tftp as well as hundreds of Foneras (Atheros).
D:\Daten\BurgNetz\Firmware\Ubiquiti\DD_WRT>tftp -i 192.168.1.20 put 14896_NS5M-DD-WRT.bin
Übertragung erfolgreich: 6906200 Bytes in 11 Sekundens, 627836 Bytes/s
This indicates success to me.
After that I only get a reply to "ping". Some pings failed, seems to be a recurring pattern.
I left it working for 5 hours. The LEDs were changung between red and orange.
During this period e.g. telnet was not working.
After 5 h all pings were successful (strange) . I left it like this a few minutes more.
Then I restarted the device.
Without the Reset Button held at startup there's no connectivity do the device at all. No ping, no telnet no http.
