I am posting this in here since this is the most recent thread regarding this topic. I would like to get dd-wrt working on my tp-link mr3420 using a ZTE MF636 3g usb modem as my WAN connection.

I successfully flashed dd-wrt r19519, so far no problems.

But trying to setup 3g-WAN with my usb modem just does not work. From the lights on the modem I can deduce that usb-modemswitch isn't working correctly, i.e. it remains in usb flash mode.

I did successfully manage to get 3g wan connection working using openwrt with luci frontend (r29592), after manually installing the missing packages (according to these instructions: http://johanbijker.blogspot.com/2012/07/installing-openwrt-on-tp-link-mr3420.html).

Gargoyle release r30752 also flashed fine, but the remaining flash memory (140k) was not sufficient to install the missing packages for 3g support.

dd-wrt seems to be the only firmware able to support network bandwidth/traffic usage logging combined with 3g wan support.

After hours of reading the other threads on this topic, I did not find anything conclusive, just vague hints and poking at the problem.

In case someone has in their mind an overview of the 3g-usb / ddwrt / tp-link mr3420 problem, please be so kind and provide us with a status update on where we stand? I am sure I am not the only one.

Thanks..

Is USB support going to bo extended to support external filesystems as well?

dmesg shows that SD card is attached
but there is no chance to mount it manually.

IMO USB storage is most important because it opens way to extroot and optware - so there is no need to make implementation of print server etc. - everybody can install it as optware.

So please make dd-wrt on MR3420 to support external memory especially with 3G modems.

No room for it in Atheros based routers with only 4MB flash, this is a 3G router originally and that is how dd-wrt support it as well.

What a petty, so the only one way to have external memory on this hardware is to switch to OpenWRT.
Too bad, I only need autossh to full success with this hardware, maybe there is enough space to add autossh?

I just installed V.24 sp2 build 19519 on my Tp-Link 3420...all fine.
Now 3G modem connection is very stable....no same that original firware!...and was not operator signal problem.
I must make compliment for the great job done...really.

I try with Huawei 1553 and 173 all ok.
What is missed is "reconnect on demand"..i can not find this option on the menu.!
I need to limit the data usage for ppl connect to the wi-fi..like 100mb and password expire in 24 hour.
How can i do?

thanks for help

OpenWRT allows you to de-select modules which you don't need so that is an option for you.

The MR3420 is discontinued, has been replaced by new Mobile routers but the MR3420 hardware is used by TP-Link for the WR842ND for which they have replaced the flash chip with an 8MB chip.
The dd-wrt build for WR842ND contains USB filesystem support, samba, ftp server as well as 3G support so that is the router you should have bought.

I see WR842ND no have in database
...firmare for Tp-Link TL-WR1043ND and TL-WR941ND have 3G support?
I'm also very interesting about this.
I tryed to install DD-wrt on my Asus Wl-500Gp v2,have everything but not 3g support!
So I wonder if TL-WR1043ND or TL-WR941ND have 3g support before to buy a new one.
Or may be you can suggest some different brand and model that can use 3G support and usb storage

Thanks for help.

WR842ND is supported from build 19327 and there is a forum thread about it - use the forum search function.
There may have been bugs in the first build but there has been 2 more build released after that.

WR941ND does not have a USB port so no 3G support.

WR1043ND has the same file system support and 3G support as WR842ND, both of them have 8MB flash.
