The dd-wrt build for WR842ND contains USB filesystem support, samba, ftp server as well as 3G support so that is the router you should have bought.

Undertone of you replay, helped me to take fast decision to try openwrt, and now I have perfect working 3g functionality (openwrt detects faster 3g modem than dd-wrt, also DHCP is faster - but in general it's almost same as in dd-wrt) and usb_storage plus extroot which allows me to run OpenVPN client on MR3420.
Also ipup script works as it should.

But I'm still big fan of dd-wrt.

Greetings.

Hi
Is there a way to use DDWRT and OpenVPN for MR3420.I've read that 4 MB flash limit the use of OpenVPN

Thanks

No, there is no way to run OpenVPN client with dd-wrt on MR3420, because there is not enough space to install additional apps/optware.

There is no jffs support and no usb-storage support in dd-wrt (on MR3420).

Also in svn19519 something is broken and OpenVPN is not working even in builds which have already implemented OpenVPN in image (as far as I know from TRAC it's fixed from ~19930).

Didn't find any information in this thread, so I am asking.
Is "tl-mr3420-webflash.bin" only for update purposes from already installed DD-WRT firmware or do I need to flash it after I initially flashed the device with "factory-to-ddwrt.bin" firmware?

If so, please tell me why. Thank you!

Don't know if anybody is still reading this thread, but it seems to be the most up to date for the TP-Link MR3420 router in HW-revision 1.x.

Last weekend I tried to get the device with two different 3G USB Huawei Modems working, but failed.

I installed latest Beta-firmware 07/20/12 (SVN revision: 19519) and attached a Huawei HiLink E353 (not branded) and a Huawei E352s-5 (German Telekom).

Both USB modems were not detected successfully. You can conclude a properly working device, if the status LED on the stick is not blinking, but running solidly. It was not possible to establish a 3G connection. When I tried to connect for several times manually, the router rebooted a few times.
Something must be wrong.

With latest original TP-Link Firmware everything is fine.
Both USB modems are detected successfully and running perfectly.

Following the guidance of unsupported mobile broadband modems, here is the output I got:

1. Huawei HiLink E353 (not branded)

Hope anybody can help.

Maybe I should open a ticket on TRAC. What do you think?

Furthermore I would appreciate, if features like view of 3G radio, view of 2G/3G, connect on demand could be implemented.
I love the great DD-WRT project!

Not much use in doing that, it is better to wait for next upcoming build which is based on a stable kernel.
3.3.8 was an experimental kernel and was not a big hit.

Your HILINK modem will not work but the other one should.

Connect on demand is possible to implement, the other things are not because there are just too many different protocols for retrieving modem info.
There is not much space left in the 4MB flash of the MR3420 and what is left should be used for supporting more modems and not for bells and whistles.

I use following DD-WRT version with HSDPA/3G USB Dongle (Huawei e3131).

ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2012/10-12-12-r20119-testing/tplink_tl-mr3420/

Works fine.

Hi all,

I am new to this forum, and thank to this forum and this specific thread, I found a better way to make use of my TP-MR-3420 router.

I installed this firmware: DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/12/12) on my TP-Link MR-3420 version 1.3 and it works very well:

- It works in client mode, as a universal repeater connecting wirelessly to another AP which is connected to the Internet; The MR-3420 broadcasts its own wi-fi signals, acts as a gateway and provides Internet access to the devices connected to it (by wire or by wireless signals);

- It works as a 3G modem, acts as a gateway and provides Internet access to the devices connected to it (by wire or by wireless signals). My 3G USB modem is Huawei E173 and it works fine.

However, client mode (repeater) and 3G modem mode do not function at the same time. In other words, it only has options to select either WAN type is connecting to another AP, OR dial a 3G connection.

In the original (factory) firmware, it allows to select an "AND THEN" option.

Is that correct or did I miss something?

It would be nice if the DD-WRT firmware allows the MR3420 dial a 3G connection as a backup in case its WAN (wireless) connection fails.

Thank you very much.

Very simple noob question - If I want to revert to stock after flashing dd-wrt on the 3220, should I just flash the stock image from within the dd-wrt web interface?

Thanks.

There are problems regard the V1 version? I'm reading mostly on V1.3 and I'm searching if there's someone with V1 and DD WRT installed.
