I did the USB mod on this router.
You can look for it here: https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=37368

Is there a chance that dd-wrt supports the usb controller from this router(its the same as wr703n)?

No, dd-wrt does not support personal mods, routers are only supported in their original state.

I have WR740N V4.21 and it works fine as repeater or as wireless client on Build 18777. I cannot say about the new build 19342 because I have not updated yet.

Just do not use the 19327 that one is bad for WR740N.

i think there is one bug, which nobody mentioned before...

i want to use router as a wireless client with specified MAC (my ISP gives ethernet over radio and only clients with specified macs are allowed)...

when I use in startup scripts:
nvram set wan_hwaddr=__:__:__:__:__:__
then in gui I see correct MAC, but connection to ISP is denied...
I've checked using other router by creating wi-fi network on it and then connected to it...
It occurs that although DD-WRT GUI says that I have new MAC address, in other router I see connection with original MAC address (no change).

I was trying some other options but no luck (in fact I am not sure what should I change)..
I've run nvram show | grep {old_wireless_mac}...
and changed the values but in other router there is still connection with old mac.

nvram set clone_wan_mac=1
nvram set wl0_hwaddr=__:__:__:__:__:__
nvram set ath0_hwaddr=__:__:__:__:__:__
nvram set wan_hwaddr=__:__:__:__:__:__

is there any chance to get it working this way?

There is no "Repeater" option for Atheros. http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wlan_Repeater

Use Client or Client Bridged for Atheros (WR740N has Atheros chipset).

Configure your client bridge like shown in the picture from the right: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge

I also had some connection problems to the main router when using the ClientBridge mode. It was fixed when I have installed DD-WRT on that one too. There was an incompatibility between the DD-WRT from the client and the Linksys firmware from the main router.

With DD-WRT installed on both works fine.

If you use simple client mode it should be better. The only disadvantage is that you will not have on the same network the PC's connected to the main router and the ones from the client router.

Anyway, I got much better performance with openwrt that dd-wrt. Also the WEP problem is pretty annoying.
In repeater mode, with dd-wrt I got 6-7 Mbit, and the wireless breaks down after some hours and I have to reboot.
With openwrt I got 12-13Mbits (17mb wired) and no issues.

Nice setup, but did you really had to add that heatsinks?
After hours of heavy load with emule/torrent I touched it an it was just warm...like 38-40ºC

Si miras la caja, no tiene mucha refrigeracion, esta blindada. Solo un pequeño ollo abajo. Por eso los disipadores; mejor prevenir que lamentar.

If you look at the box, not much refrigeration, this armor. Only a small Ollo below. So sinks, better safe than sorry.

Just flashed my WR740N with DD-WRT latest build.

The stock firmware was decent and pretty much stable till the wireless drops if more than 10 clients connected.

So far so good Very Happy
