TL-WR740N does have temperature issues and requires fans especially if it is deployed in a closed box outdoor like on the illustrated picture. Hardware versions up to 3 work pretty hot while v4 stays considerably colder than its predecessors. It is a whole new concept in hardware while v1,2,3 are hardware identical and less good (not to say worse, they all work well but v4 works best of them).

I have installed openwrt + luci GUI and it is working ok know:
- no problem with client mode
- no problem with setting ap for private network
- NO PROBLEM with custom mac address for client mode

Until there is no new release, I reccommend you to do the same - openwrt.

Of course. So far it has been 4 months since the first build and at the moment most of the bugs are still there.
Openwrt guys take care about them and try to fix and will respond you kindly on the forums, while here I got rude responses most of the time.

En: One question that originated with a fellow ham and

expert in the wireless field.

He says that hardware comes at a range of 2km to 5km.

They say?

Well, I'm not an expert, but you're using an omnidirectionnal antenna, and also this device will output only 18dBm at max power, about 63mW.

With this router and the stock antenna, put in my window (I live in a 4th floor) I can see my network at about 80m (the end of the street) with an RSSI of -70dB, which is ok.

Maybe you can achieve 300-500m if you set the antenna in a high place and it is a clean terrain, but it would be a very poor signal.
So I would forget about that 2KM...

Without using high power antennas both for the router and the clients, you won't be able to get that 2KM, unless you make a link with high gain directional antennas, in that case, it may work.

In the images shown I can see a RSSI between -80 and -90dBm . That is almost the limit within you may connect with a unencrypted network, and with a very slow speed and bad quality signal.

With WPA with signals below -86dBm is almost impossible to establish the connection.

What is the distance between the clients and the router for that signal levels?

Hello guys!
Here is a full flash dump of 4MB flash of this router (TL-WR740N HW rev 4.2) which was used to recover "dead" router. May be some one will find it useful.
It should be flashed directly to chip using SPI programmer.

Its a lot faster just flashing the bootloader with the spi programmer, and then flashing the full dump with TFTP. Wink

The repeater mode doesn't exist in atheros. It's client mode, but adding a virtual interface as AP.
AT first I tried client mode only, and connecting the computer through ethernet to the switch.
As it worked well, I added the virtual interface, as AP, bridged with the client. Worked the same in the ethernet side, and then connecting through wifi and also got great performance.

Do you think there is a difference between hw versions?, according to tp-link the only diference between wr740n v4.x and wr741nd v4.x is the detachable antenna, and also the only diference between subversions (4.x , 4.y, etc) is the firmware (software) version.

I am reading mixed results, as I said, I also have a wr841nd v7.2 (build r17201) and client mode works perfect, but that same build doesn't seem to work for people with hw version 7.1, and I kindda see the same patern here, wr740n v4.2 working ok, but wr741nd v4.3 having issues.

Hi All..

Just got in my new 740n ver 4.22 from Newegg..
To tell you I was a little nervous about getting this working...but a BIG THANKS to devs for the working firmware..
I needed this for getting my Slingbox on my network and it worked without a hicup ...
I am hooked up wirelessly to my Verizon Fios router without changing it to DD-WRT like I've read someone mentioned somewhere..
