Hate to be a the bearer of bad news, but unless you are absolutely positive that it is a V1, it will not work with dd-wrt.

The currently shipping E4200 is V2 and is based on a chipset that is incompatible with dd-wrt.

I ordered an e4200 yesterday from linksys, I wanted to know if it's true that the wifi is better on stock firmware. I prefer the layout of dd-wrt. I have used it on my Buffalo whr-g54s and e3000 but I don't want to sacrifice range for it.

The wifi driver dd-wrt uses is the same for the E3000 and the E4200 but the 5GHz wifi chip is slightly different.
I think you can expect the same performance from E4200 on the 2.4GHz band as the E3000.
Why don't you just try, it is not difficult to revert to stock firmware if you find dd-wrt to under-perform.

I've tried installing the E4200 v1 firmware to the v2 device , sad to say doesn't work.. after 30-30-30 reset I get back to normal firmware.

I've seen the firmware online ,and the GPL source code is also availabe on request

Does anyone want to develop this for some cash ?

actually, i find the wireless to perform less than on the stock firmare. There may be some settings to make it better, but i haven't found them yet. I have divided the two channels into a pure G and a pure N network, as well as setting transmitting power to 240 for both channels.

I dont think I will be switching back though, because i LOVE the administration panel!

240 is way to high. Keep it under 100

I'll share my experience on this... (The bottom line: back to the stock firmware due to strange behaviour.)

My installation procedure followed closely (if not exactly) as described in the wiki for E4200. Just for the record I describe bellow:
* FW_E4200_1.0.04.011_US_20120116_code.bin (the original and latest Linksys firmware just to be sure);
* backup configuration;
* hard 30/30/30 reset;
* dd-wrt.v24-18777_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-e4200.bin
* hard 30/30/30 reset;
* dd-wrt.v24-18777_NEWD-2_K2.6_big-nv60k.bin
* hard 30/30/30 reset;

And after fiddling with DD-WRT, back to the stock version:
* FW_E4200_1.0.04.011_US_20120116_code.bin (with restore to defaults)
* restore configuration;

Now what worked and what not:
* everything **seemed** to work (I didn't try the wireless N, or USB);
* unfortunately WLAN (G) was unstable with a MacBook Pro;
* and unfortunately WLAN (G) or LAN was unusable with a Lenovo X1; (maybe it is related with http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=151947 ...)
* strangely if I set the IP address by hand on the Lenovo it worked (i.e. routing worked);
* WAN (with PPPoE) came up quite later after the boot; and it was somehow flaky...
* I also have the feeling that during early boot, the WAN port is bridged with the rest of the LAN ports as I got an IP-address which wasn't from my set range; (maybe someone on the WAN network connected wrongly the WAN cable in his LAN;)

I'll try DD-WRT in a couple of months again.
