Yesterday I installed r20548 version in my wr842nd v1. It works perfectly to my actual use.
I use client mode with a virtual wlan conected with a Xavi Solos 4610 ADSL router.
LAN and USB Leds don´t work (lock, wifi and tool led work always on), but it´s not important for me.
I put a pendrive (4GB with FAT32) in the USB port and I could access (mounted to /mnt) in ftp mode throw a Windows XP system, copying and reading files.
I think CPU charge is normal...
Today I´ll try SAMBA with a external hard disk (NTFS) and I post the result.

Hi ashrambo
Were you able to make your NTFS drive work with SAMBA?

Can anybody give a short hint if the latest version is recommend for productive use?
The stock firmware is quite unstable in my case and I'm looking for a stable alternative...

Does the latest firmware has support for JFFS2?
How much space is avaiable? I heard there is no space for JFFS, but old builds like 201207 has, thanks.
EDIT: I display the new firmware. I only analyze the PPPOE relationship and it's functional. The WiFi protection is better then the openWrt. For now only the MAC Adress Duplicate is not operating so I contact my ISP to replenish my MAC.
EDIT2: Now the wireless router has modified the MAC deal with alone without my control. Again contact to my ISP to modify the MAC. Also The USB is not operating - did't discover my generate and the mild of the USB on the wireless router is not illuminated. That's for now.
I recently purchased a WR842ND, and I think buying it was a very good decision!
Now I'm using it with v24-sp2 (07/24/13) std - build 22118. I'm done with the following things and the router serves everything correctly:
- PPPOE sharing
- telnet, ssh and web access (with the first firmware 21061 factory-to-ddwrt.bin I was unable to access the router via ssh and remote web gui wasn't working too. After the update both working fine.)
- working with a 1 terabyte ext3 formatted 2.5" external USB3 HDD (no external power needed)
- Optware installed on HDD
- Using the built-in samba and ftp client
- Using the router as a torrent server, now I don't need to keep my laptop powered on at night while downloading (my connection is quite slow, max 300 kbyte/sec)
That's all. I admit it was slightly difficult configuring everything, but now it's still working like a charm! I enjoy having a router like this!
