I just setup DD-WRT using the current build (v24-18024_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16).
I configured the VPN PPTP server and everything seems to be working as advertised ... However SUPER slow?!
If I attach a laptop to the DD-WRT router on one of its LAN-Ports I get normal speed.
When I take the laptop to my next door neighbor and connect using the windows-7 build-in PPTP client. I get connected ... I get reasonable ping-times ... nslookup ist fast ... however trying to SURF takes ages.
Here is the FUNNY part: Using Google chrome I can connect to any of the Google pages pretty fast (slower than with the LAN connection) ... however when I try any other website ... it’s so slow that it takes more than 5 minutes to bring a page up ... if at all.
QUESTION: What can I check / adjust / do to make it go faster?
I did check for DNS problems early on ... name resolution is not a problem
Ping works to many systems ... yet not HTTP ?! In the browser I can connect to Google ... relatively fast page build up ... yet any link outside the Google empire does not build up at all (I guess too slow ... the tab-headers come through ... so I get something).
As mentioned above, I AM able to surf at normal speed when connected to the physical LAN port of the router.
When coming in through VPN ... I have the problems. This tells me that the LAN settings are generally OK ... the difference between the LAN and VPN (network) settings are very small (different ip-address-room).
... I continue reading ... hope for more pointers ?!
The VPN tunnel is created and I get out the door on the other side. ("My IP" became the public IP address of the PPTP server). So VPN is working ... or sort of.
Looked at MTU size ... no change
Looked at DNS setup / speed ... no change
Can FTP to another site ... get connected ... BUT can not transfer any files ... just browse the distant directory structure. (Without the VPN connected ... everything works fine)
Installed a MULTIPING with history support ... all I can tell once the names are resolved the ping go through the VPN ... a little slower ... yet still in normal ms response times.
Yet, when I try to SURF; the pages do not build ... EXCEPT Google (regardless of the BROWSER I use ?!)
NOTE: I still have a hunch that this is all a CONFIGURATION issue ... I just do not have any idea where or what in the DEFAULT-SETTINGS this might be ?!
I can open a PPTP tunnel (using WINDOWS) from #2 ==> #1.
I get 192.168.111.151 as the remote IP.
I can access not only only other PPTP clients ... but I can also access everything in the local subnet of Site #1
When PPTP is running ALL traffic pops out of the DD-WRT router @ Site #1 ... I can not access any system at Site #2 (which is CORRECT ==> ALL traffic uses the tunnel).
I can bring up web-sites from any system INSIDE the Site#1 subnet ... any web-site OUTSIDE (Internet) will NOT work ... except GOOGLE.
Q: Why / WHAT makes the difference of accessing local (subnet) systems vs systems outside?
Q: Why can the TWO DD-WRT routers not get along as PPTP server/client ... they never connect? I can only successfully use a WINDOWS 7 client ?!
Sash, thanks for the MTU hint ... I tried that early on in my research ... was set correctly ...
HOWEVER, I was able to get at least partial success:
Here is the OLD setup (with all the issues mentioned in this thread):
ROUTER SETTINGS:
192.168.11.1 / 255.255.255.0 / 0.0.0.0
PPTP SERVER SETTINGS:
192.168.111.2 / 192.168.111.151-200
Here are the NEW settings for the PPTP SERVER:
192.168.11.2 / 192.168.11.151-200
THE RESULT: I can now get to ANY page on the web
BUT its still slow ~2 Mbit (DN) / 6 Mbit (UP) (I have 50 Mbit (DN) / 20 Mbit (UP) pipes @ both sites)
Q: Apparently I had to have the PPTP Server on the same subnet as the LAN-Router Settings (11) ... What adjustment could I have made to make it work with any PPTP IP settings? Add a route?
Q: WHY is this so SLOW? Is it just the "nature" of PPTP? OpenVPN better? Is it my HARDWARE (Asus N16)?
