I'm tearing my hair out. Okay, so I'm a newb, but I've tackled similar projects before. I just want to be able to encrypt all my traffic because I'm tired of threats from my ISP.

I've got a brand new Archer a7 v5
firmware 1.1.2 Build 20210125 rel.39623(5553)

I can't seem to get it to install DD-WRT firmware. Installing via manual upgrade using the interface it came with is a no go. Invalid file type.

So I found a guide to walk me through a TFTP install. I downloaded SolarWinds, made sure I had the latest beta build (06-21-2021-r46979), I changed the name of the file to ArcherC7v5_tp_recovery.bin, plugged the ethernet cord into the fourth port from the left (the last one on the right), changed my ip to static @192.168.0.66, then read that sometimes the C7 needs to be @192.168.1.66, so I tried that. Nothing works.

I thought maybe the configuration files for surfshark were causing problems, so I uninstalled that. When I try to get the router into recovery mode, I unplug the ethernet cable leading to my modem, shut the power off, hold in the reset button and turn it on. I've tried holding it for long and short intervals. All it seems to do is reset. No recovery mode. SolarWinds just sits there. The file's in the TFTP-Root folder, where it's supposed to go.

I'm out of ideas. I bought this router because it's supposed to be an easy one to work with. What could I possibly be doing wrong? The only thing I haven't tried that I can think of is flashing it with an older build, but I really don't think that'll fix anything. Please help!

Forgot to mention: I also tried installing OpenWRT firmware, and that didn't work, either.

Okay. I tried flashing it back to the oldest firmware build I could find. It wouldn't even do that. Is there anything I can do aside from just returning this piece of junk?

follow those instructions

1-turn off firewall and any antivirus

2-TFTP on PC, use Tftpd32

3-rename factory to ddwrt file to ArcherC7v5_tp_recovery.bin

4- Set PC: IP: 192.168.0.66 mask: 255.255.255.0

5-Plug PC on Lan port of router

6- Press and hold reset button, and turn on router

7- router boot and download ArcherC7v5_tp_recovery.bin from TFTP server of PC on IP: 192.168.0.66

bear in mind:
-best results with Tftpd32 (google it)
-on some routers tftp to work you'd need a switch in between
-correct name is vital..have a look at tftpd32 log viewer section when you start tftp router session
-on some routers you have to set tftp settings: anticipation window of 1024

...and my firewall was up. Thank you. I can't believe I've been missing something that obvious. I got it to connect. Finally.

I'm sure you not only read but used the initial flash file from the wiki: https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/TP_Link_Archer_A7v5
