hi guys,

i have an old WRT54G router that we wish to replace, notably, for one that has gigabit ports.

Before i go out and by a new one i wanted to check whether or not there is a general consensus on the best DD-WRT compatible router available out there.

I think the linksys/cisco WRT series is always great but then again, i'm not exactly following the world of networking everyday so i could be wrong.

The real basic requirement are gigabit ports, dual band n wireless and the ability to network bond (though that last part would be more of a dd-wrt feature wouldn't it?)

anything beyond that is icing on the cake.

Budget notwithstanding, what would your top three picks be for a new router?

(and possibly, what DD-WRT build would you install on it?)

Thank you.

Based on what you said, not really in order:

-WNDR3700 v1/v2 (DO NOT GET A v3!)
-WNDR3800
-DIR-825 B1/B2
-WZR-HP-AG300H
-E4200 v1 (DO NOT GET A v2! NO DD-WRT SUPPORT)
-E3000

Top 3 if I had to..

1. WZR-HP-AG300H
2. WNDR3700 v1
3. E4200 v1

Note the Atheros units have stronger radios, less jitter @ higher TX powers etc, faster improving drivers, better QoS.

this info should be folded into the "What's the best Router" sticky/discussion at the top of this page.

We are all looking for that magic router that most importantly runs DD-WRT stable with

big CPU
Large Memory
big NVRAM
USB ports
Dual Radios
Gig ports

anything else?
