Hi,
I have recently accidentally flashed my WRT160Nv3 with the v24 generic firmware. I believe it is now bricked, as when I turn it on the power LED blinks briefly before turning off. The port LEDs turn on when I plug something in, but when I ping the router I am unable to receive any TTL responses. I have attempted to perform a 30/30/30 reset with no success. I am considering establishing a serial connection but I am unable to find any information on how to do so.

Is there a way to unbrick my router?

Please see the jtag wiki. I am not sure the v.3 has a jtag port, so check on that first. Otherwise, see the serial thread that is linked at the end of note 6 of the peacock announcement.

jtag is not supported on this router..

Tornado, who develops the jtag utility still needs some newer devices to add support for the new serial flash chips, and some routers have 8bit data busses.

The only way to recover this router at this time is via serial console.

I have read the thread but am still confused on how to connect a serial cable to my router. Does anyone know how to do this?

I have seen on other versions that there are points to connect to the TTL converter. However, on this router I can only find a block of 12 pads to the left, and 5 copper pads labeled TP12 to TP16. To which points am I meant to connect the adaptor to?

the 5 copper pads are the serial connections..

I believe from left to right:

ground, n/c ,rx tx, vcc (3.3v)

Check with an ohm meter to ground to make sure I got it correct from left to right.

left pad should show zero ohms to ground, the one directly to the right of the left pad, will be open to ground.

Just a quick question, does the USB TTL work as well as the serial one?

After many tries, I am certain that this method will not work for this sort of bricking on this sort of router. I am not getting any output at all. Perhaps it is time to get a new one...

I have fixed dozens of these routers using serial. If you are not seeing the router booting in serial, you have something wrong. even if your baud was wrong, you would still see something even though garbage.

115200,8,1,n no flow control.. from left to right on the 5 pads.. grd, n/c, rx, tx, vcc (3.3v)

I can't check right now but incase tx & rx is mixed up, just switch'em.. you should see output when the router boots.

make sure your terminal program is using the correct com port.

Yes, got it to work! turns out I didn't need to connect the 3.3v, perhaps I misunderstood your instructions. I was able to get to get the firmware working again. Thankyou everyone for all your help.

I know this is a little dated, but I have a serial connection coming and want to get my router back up. Once I hope I get into hyperterminal is it easy to fix them? I see how to connect them but actually the commands once we get in...help screens?

Thanks

Mike
