What is the benefit of upgrading to this version? Does it allow DHCP forwarding over wireless?

I use WDS and have DHCP forwarding over wireless no problem on this version, I have been using dd-wrt since 20676 or something version. I thought that DHCP forwarding over wireless was a standard feature, just dropdown menu on Setup, change to DHCP Forwarder, type in IP of DHCP server.

That feature wasn't working on 17201. I'll definitely take a look.

If you have 2 atheros or 2 broadcom dd-wrt routers, use WDS, only use a repeater bridge as a last resort. WDS is a true transparent bridge, it will allow roaming between AP and station, ie moving client, but Repeater bridge does not do that as well as WDS. It is a good idea to set up a Connection Watchdog (Keep ALive tab in Admin) on the client to point to the primary router. That way you don't have to manually reboot the secondary every time the primary is rebooted.

The main reason to use a newer build is the many bug fixes, just take a peek at the timeline I linked to above.

Thank you so much for the tutorial. I've been trying to find a solution for my TP-Link and now it works.

Just one thing, online game doesn't go as it should, in particular in mobile devices. After a few seconds it looses connection for 1 or 2 seconds and then it reconnects after 10s or so... But it keeps going on for as long as I am playing.

Any settings that I should reconfigure?

Thanks

Let me jump in here and give my results too. I`m a lttle confused since I haven`t seen any builds with "wireless repeater" or "repeater bridge" in there. Been using an "AP - client bridge" setup for several years now with very few problems. I just follow directions in the sticky at the beginning of this section. Recently upgraged both to wr841ng ver. 9s (Qualcomm Anthros chips @ 550mhz.) and currently running #27506 which I found to be the most recommended in many threads for these routers. Like tlhIngan wrote, I read the warnings to not use anything below #28493. I bricked a wr841ng ver.9 with #29495, was able get it back and put it in a continious boot loop with #30605 and haven`t been able to recover it. I use IPs 1.1 for AP and 1.2 for client bridge. I also use 2 different SSIDs. #27506 may be a bit older but is very stable. I have no issues whatsoever except a minor problem with a VoIP phone on the client bridge which I`m researching on an other thread now .

You are correct. Repeater Bridge was removed in Atheros builds a while back. It is still in Broadcom builds though.

Just discovered the world of dd-WRT while trying to set up an extended wifi network on about 1 acre of land with 3 small buildings.
Got myself a 4$ TP-Link TL-WR841N (client). Don;t expect it to cover the whole area, but thought it might reach the 1 building I need it to.

I am connecting to an Actiontec c1000a (access point)(I do have a Zyxel c1000z as well, they I have not tried to set up yet, thought it would be fun to try this first... and it has been, IP set to xxx.xxx.1.1, range xxx.xxx.1.100 to xxx.xxx.1.150)
I, foolishly, assumed I could use the magic of WPS to connect the two units, until I learned about chipset differences and the inability to play nice together.

Research pointed me to flashing the firmware... tomato... dd-wrt... gargoyle... decided on dd-wrt (as the community support seemed great)

Flashed it to the 2015 release of the dd-WRT for the TL-WR841N.
(2015 › 04-01-2015-r26635 › tplink_tl-wr841ndv9)

dd-WRT set to IP xxx.xxx.1.151, range xxx.xxx.152 to xxx.xxx.1.202 (50 IPs)

During set up I was connected via ethernet cable to lan1 on the client .

Up to the apply settings stage I could see the dd-wrt (client) signal in my wifi networks (as well as my main wifi network)

Wifi assigned IP always appears to come from AP, Lan1 IP comes from client. (will try to disable DHCP in client after writing this)

Cannot ping the client from terminal, wireless (over home network) or when connected to Lan1.

Do not see the client in the device table of the Actiontec router.

Cannot connect to the internet when connected via lan to the client.

The WiFi led on the client flashes intermittently (3x6x3x9x3x12...etc...)

I followed the instructions exactly.

Next I will be trying to disable DHCP in the client, if that doesn't work I will be trying to set up the c1000z in a similar manner (without the dd-wrt flash first, seeing they are the same chipset, they should play nicer together?)

Cheers- and a grateful thank you to anyone who catches this old thread and has any advice.

I can tell you should easily cover 1 acre with these on WDS because I`m doing it myself. I have a bunch of these WR-841n and my experience has been ver.2 thru 7 work well together, 8 is out there all on its own and 9,10 and 11 work great together. I have 3 right now up 19 days without so much as an error, dropped signal or reboot. I can`t say much about the other 2 models since I can`t find them in the supported devices.

Hi Ramblin-
Are they connected via wifi?
That is the trick I am trying to pull off...
Really don;t want to run 100ft of cable Smile

Its all wifi. WDS AP is connected to ISP router with a short jumper. Station 1 is 530 ft. away with clear line of sight. Sta. 2 is 225 ft. with some obstacles. AP speed is 68- 72 mbps and 6 up. Sta.1 is 50-55 mbps and Sta. 2 is solid 60+ mbps. All 3 running syslogs with 23 days uptime and no dropped signals or reboots. TX packets are at 8 figures with zero errors.

So the first WDS is connected via a cable (Jumper)?

Thanks for your input... tried again this evening with similar results...
New problem...
When connected via Lan1 to the client, I do not get served an IP and can only manage it via wifi (after resetting 309/30/30)
Once I went through the process of configuring the client as a WDS AP... again I was unable to connect (via wifi, or via Lan1)

OK, It is still not clear what kind of hardware you are trying to run together. For WDS to work you must have pretty much EXACT same hardware. If you are trying to use the WR841 as a Station then the Actiontec must be setup as WDS AP. Since its not in the supported devices section we don`t know what hardware (processor) you have. You indicate you loaded wr841 ver.9 software but never really say which version router you have. This thread is for ver.7 which is Antheros. Ver.9 is Qualcomm and even these 2 will not work together. Even if all the hardware is correct I think your IPs may not be correct. Make sure you have 2 routers with exact same hardware that have DD-WRT on them first. 2 different setups, 1 as WDS AP and 1 as WDS Station.
