I've been using this Buffalo WZR-600DHP for a long time now.
I wanted an opinion on if I should attempt an update or just buy a new device.

Wireless has never really been a noticeable issue for me. We have a couple dozen devices, but I guess I never noticed performance issues. We dont stream a lot over wifi, but we do have a number of wireless security cameras.

My main issue is actually ethernet. I am trying to stream SteamLink using a rpi but I'm constantly getting disconnects. It says it can connect at 90mb\s (over cat 5), which should be plenty.

Its currently running the latest official build of 'DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (11/04/12) std - build 20180'
This site says I can update to 'v3.0 [Beta] Build: 40559'

It will be a lot of hassle to reconnect all of my wifi devices, so if I wont see any performance benefits then I will just look for a new device.

I spent basically all day yesterday trying to find a replacement device, but I kind of gave up because there are no 'new' choices made in the last few years under 100 bucks.

'This site says I can update to 'v3.0 [Beta] Build: 40559'

ignore router database suggestion 40559 is bad build and very old...its a common error ppl, to not read the forum new builds treads...

Do not use the router database for recommended build information or "latest release" information, it is outdated still. The latest release is 43652, and your best bet is to upgrade to 43516 or 43652 if you do upgrade:

Okay, I will give the update a shot first. I am surprised that this router is still supported by the latest builds.
Thanks
