The fact that Asus RT-N16 has a 32k NVRAM on 22000M is annoying. I don't have enough space to store my VPN keys.

Hello There,

Im planning upgrading my RT-16N from the firmware version Mega R18024 recommended at http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N16

to the kingkong 22000+ version at http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K26/

I noticed that the 22200 version was moved to archive due that the latest kingkong version (r22000++) includes heartbleed fix for openVPN:
http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K26/r22000++/kingkong-nv32k-broadcom.bin

quote from http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K26/Changelog
"Note: Moved all builds that are affected by heartbleed bug to directory archive.
If you are using openvpn, freeradius, asterisk you should not use these builds anymore."

So my question is:
Does anybody knows what was the difference between 22200 and the 22000 version that currently is available (Build r22000++ 7.June 2014)

try a K3 build, it expands the nvram to 64K.

See my signature. Do a 30/30/30, then immediately put the router in recovery mode and with the Asus recovery tool you may directly flash that build.

sounds good. i'll do that.

i'm currently running the kingkong-kingkong-nv32k-broadcom.bin build running on my RT-N16 and i'm having issues with all devices disconnecting/unable to access router. cycling the power resolves the issue for about a day, and then it happens again.

i'll try flashing with the recovery tool and post the results here. any reason why using the firmware upgrade in the dd-wrt gui is a bad idea?

also, is there a specific .trx mini file i should flash before upgrading? i'm going off the wiki page for the R16 (http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Asus_RT-N16#Out-of-the-box_factory_firmware_upgrade) which says to use ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/others/eko/BrainSlayer-V24-preSP2/2010/08-12-10-r14929/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-14929_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx

thanks!

If you already have DD-WRT already installed, flashing via DD-WRT upgrade function is ok.

OK, so since I'm already on the build I want to be on, I'm going to try clearing the NVRAM via a 30/30/30 and seeing if the issue persists.

EDIT: clearing NVRAM via 30/30/30, installing the build I wanted, and clearing via 30/30/30 once more resolved all issues.

Hi all. I'm looking to update the DD-WRT firmware on my Asus RT-N16 router running v24-sp2 (08/07/10) mini (SVN revision 14896).
The main reason for wanting to update is so that I can use the limit bandwidth (firewall) script. Right now limiting download works, but not upload. So I'm hoping updaing the firmware will help do the trick. For reference you can see that code here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=178965

I've spent a hefty amount of time going through the announcement, RT-N16 and other related threads. I'm wondering if someone could help recommend which firmware would be a good fit for my needs: stability, fixed/minimal known issues, and hopefully working with the limit bandwidth script.

1) The latest Kong r22000++ seems to be popular. I'm leaning towards this.
http://desipro.de/ddwrt/K26/r22000++/kingkong-nv32k-broadcom.bin

2) The Asus_RT-N16 wiki page recommends either
Mini -dd-wrt.v24-18024_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx
Mega -dd-wrt.v24-18024_NEWD-2_K2.6_mega.bin
I assume this is because it is the latest known stable build, so it's for novices like me.

3) The latest K2.6 build, which from what I understand is similar to kong's version.
ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2014/06-23-2014-r24461/broadcom_K26/dd-wrt.v24-24461_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_RT-N16.trx

4) Something else?

Note that I'd rather not dip my feet into the 3.x kernel... yet. Smile

Thanks!

On a side note, are these the same versions?

I also have problems with asus rt-n16.

14929 (recommended) build has bad wi-fi signal, wich make alot of lags in game/stream video.

24160 has a problem with wi-fi start. I need start in manually with save & apply buttons in wi-fi section. Plus sometimes it drops wi-fi.

I tryed to flash K3x builds, but it dont work at all: my rounter not even loads, i need to use tftpd to flash K26 back.

I need advices what to try now. I basically dont need all what dd-wrt offers, but i need good wi-fi, nat/qos and i want once try to setup openvpn.
What other firmwares has such features?
Kong?
Tomato or it mods?
Something other?

Kong 22000++ is the way to go if you are sticking with the 2.6 kernel for better WAN throughput and want to run OTRW2.

I believe the last 2.6 version of Brainslayer was 21676. After that version on 2.6, wifi seems to have broken.

The only benefit of the 3.x version on this platform is being able to mount larger than 2 tb hard drives and the 64k of NVRAM at the expense of WAN speed.

Thanks for the reply. I don't plan to run Optware the right way Take 2 (OTRW2). I don't have a need for 3.x kernel features. And I definitely want stable wifi. So it sounds like I should try Brainslayer K2.6 SVN 21676.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is there a difference between these two files? Which should I use?

I will be updating directly from my v24-sp2 (08/07/10) mini SVN 14896 build. I assume this is ok.

Well, you don't have to run OTRW2 if you don't want it. Kong 22000++ is more tested, more reliable, more security patched and more tweaked for speed than BrainSlayer's 21676. I don't know about WiFi since I don't use it much.

Just flash any nv32k build from your build, it should work. An RT-N16 is very hard to brick, just in case make sure you download Asus Recovery tool before flashing it.

@slobodan and madman999
kingkong-nv32k-broadcom install = Success!
Thanks to both of you for the feedback.

Oh man, I was really dreading something going wrong, and then having to deal with a bricked unit. One thing I noticed is that my power jack sometimes needs to be pressed down a bit when plugged in, in order to engage power. So I need to be extra careful moving the router or tugging on the cord. Luckily, that did not factor in during the firmware upgrade.

edit: Unfortunately, this did not fix my issue with bandwidth limit script working properly. If anyone can offer feedback on this, please reply HERE.
