Yes Tomato on N53 is working great..

Using ASUS Utility can put any firmware on it..

When I get in recovery mode..

I used 192.168.1.1 to clean nvram only because ...the web console will not you install 3rd party firmware

Then I use the asus utility to install file

it will say that its no-good, click install anyway

With Tomato by Shibby or Victek, my 5Ghz SSID is blocked after light traffic so is unusable.
2.4 Ghz is working great...

Using Asus stock FW, the 5Ghz is disappearing like Houdini Sad

Dont know why Its not working...

This is my set-up..

Fios Router...

Asus n-53 as repeater

I used the 6.7MB file from here:
http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26RT-N/build5x-121-EN/Asus%20RT-Nxx/

Settings...

Go to BASIC-NETWORK

under LAN ...change router address to 192.168.1.3 ( other than FIOS 192.168.1.1)

Under Wireless 2.4..

select Wireless Ethernet Bridge
Wireless Network Mode = AUTO
Enter SSID
Used WPA-PERSONAL
AES

SHARE KEY

(all this above should be the same as the FIOS setting)

Under 5 G

Wireless Mode = Access Point
Wireless Network Mode= AUTO
Enter SSID( different than 2.4)
the rest :
AUTO
40
UPPER
WPA-Personal
AES

Shared key....I used same password as 2.4

then click save at bottom

THATS it...simple

let me know

I just watched a 10 min youtube video connected to 5 G...with no problems..

Could someone give me a rundown on the most up to date dd-wrt firmware for the asus rt-n53. I'm brand new to this and looking to up my performance on the router if at all possible and would appreciate any help. Thanks.

There is NO DD-WRT for this router..

Tomato by Shibby is best option..

Unless you go with latest firmware from Asus...as I recall, everything was working including 5G

I hate this router...
This is my second one, the first one was changed under warranty, but I have the same problem using stock firmware or Tomato by Shibby.

I use N53 as an wired AP and I have 3 routers in my home, all with the same SSID, but different channels for each 2.4/5Ghz band

SSDI 2.4 = WIFI 2.4
SSID 5 = WIFI 5

THe problem is on medium traffic, the 5Ghz band is disappearing!

It cannot be found even on logs!

I don't know if this will help...
I'm showing my slingbox being broadcast to my phone on the 5G network for 10-15 minutes. The max rate of Slingbox is 8 m htz / sec
My set up is FIOS Router and the N53 as a repeater/bridge...

I had no interruptions while I was watching it..

1. flash initial firmware.
2. perform full reset 30-30-30.
3. go to 192.168.1.1 and flash full version of firmware.
4. perform full reset 30-30-30.
please note, wan port can migrate to lan4 (in previous versions it happen), so try to connect via all ports, if you will have connection problem.

I realise this post is a year old, but I was wondering if anyone who installed tomato shibby on this router is still around. I am getting a very poor signal on this router (or maybe that is normal?).

It is showing under 50% even though the router is in the same room as me.

All my routers are on different channels.

This is my first tomato router, I have no idea what to expect here.

My Slingbox is working just fine using the Wireless Bridge

I think we wont get any better with this router..

I've done a couple of hundred of these now. Great routers for modest need users.

Flashing them is a nightmare though! The Asus firmware tool doesn't always work. Sometimes downgrading to previous Asus firmware versions helps, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes you can get to the CFE mode website, sometimes you can't. It's infuriating!

My current theory is that some recent Asus firmware has changed the bootloader, and more recent bootloaders are much more finicky--they don't present the CFE mode GUI any more, and ?.

You have to do this within about a minute or so or the router will spontaneously jump out of recovery mode and you have to start again.

Wait a while (about 2 minutes) after tftp finishes sending the file. Power cycle the router. It should boot up.

Good luck to you all. I hope this saves someone some headache.


A couple of additional notes worth considering..
1) Probably best to factory reset before starting. Do this by holding the WPS button while applying power, watch for blinking power light and then let it finish booting up (not 100% sure you have to let it finish booting).
2) Do the initial flash with an older smaller firmware image. So maybe stick with 114? I use 124 to great success. I've had trouble with 132. Again, this isn't 'science' yet, but.. You'll have more hair left when you finish if you just skip straight to tftp flashing and a small initial image.

As for a windows method. I think just enabling the windows command line TFTP tool should work just about identically to the Linux method.
