Hi there,
until now everything worked ok long time, but I started to have weird problem.
My specification: asus rt-n16, DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/24/13) mega - build 22118

In the last week my router stopped working, "turned" itself off twice (4AM, then after few day again at 6:20AM). All lights were turned off, it looks like it is completely off (can't do anything, my network is down)

When I unplug power cable from router and then plug it back, it started to work again, lights are on, everything is working for few days great. (after few day scenario repeated)

What can be the issue?

22118 is a very old build, from 2013. You should update: ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2015/

I bet capacitors are starting to go bad.

Hi guys, thanks for replies!
Now my router is completely "died" and I am not able to turn it on (as I was able to do it few hour ago).

Thanks Malachi for capacitor idea. I am going to buy new capacitors and we will see.

Open it up first to see if the cap is bulging.

Malachi, I measured voltage on capacitors with multimeter but I don't know to identifiy, which one is faulty. Could you please post correct voltage values capacitors should have with connected power?

I have no idea. I've only replaced ones that were visibly bulging.

oh, ok. My are not bulging but for example the smallest one has very low voltage value. I will try to replace it.

You don't test capacitors by voltage but by MFD which takes a special meter (capacitor tester).

I would try a new power supply before messing with changing the caps. These router shipped with crap barely rated units.Increasing power supply to at least 1.5 amps can help with stability. Jack is a 5.5 ext. x 2.1mm interior. Many of us are using a highly over rated power supply u can find on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-3A-AC-DC-Adapter-LCD-Monitor-TV-Power-Supply-Cord-Charger-4A-5-5mm-/200804999502?hash=item2ec0e9214e:g:t4MAAOSwhcJWJwX1
not because it needs that many amps but because someone here got it and tested it on specialized equipment a few years ago and said they provide cleaner more stable power.

A bad cap sometimes budges or appears to be leaking. But some times its hard to
tell. There are only 4 Caps on the RT-N16 just look
at them get the rating of the side and replace them all. only buy quality replacements (a lot of cheap crappy caps out there) use google for brand suggestions.

1 cap maybe underated, see this (might be of help)

i would try a new power supply first but it could be the caps.

my rt-n16 looked dead and caps weren;t bulging, replaced the cap s anyway and it came back to life.

Where can I get the latest test Firmware or older ones?

Change the can caps in the unit for sure....and get a new power supply. These power supplies are notorious for having bad caps as well....its easier just to buy a new 12V @ 5A supply.

Unfortunately, looking for bulges/leaks isn't a definitive test. I've replaced a lot of bad and failed caps in routers; not a single one had a visible sign of failure (vs. those I've fixed in motherboards, power supplies, and TVs). The capacitance measurement is a better indicator, but isn't necessarily definitive either, especially since the base tolerance can be large. That said, ESR meters aren't a typical tool (vs a multi- or capacitance meter).

In summary; I agree w/ redhawk0 (unless you have access to an ESR meter). But did you mean a '0.5A' supply?

Hopefully, if your voltage regulator caps -are- bad, they haven't already fried something else. Sad

No...these routers came with either a 1.25A or 1.5A power pack...my personal opinion is that this is too light for a dual USB capable unit. 3A - 5A is a better choice in power supply.

Hello friends, thank you for your help! I replaced capacitor 470uF/16V and my asus is working again (no settings lost). What a tiny part can make it work again.
You saved me 100 bucks! Smile thank you thank you

I did not have 470uF so I replaced this capacitor with 820uF/16V - I hope it will not harm my router.

The regulated voltage will be slightly higher but the router will work fine...the 470uF probably gave you 11.8-12.1V board voltage....the 820uF will be in the 12.4-12.7V range...it will be fine.

Glad you got it working.
