I just got one from DELL and it is quite disappointing version 8 which is not DD-WRT friendly. To my understanding, we should do

1. erase Vxworks,
2. Tftp DD-WRT micro.

I notice there are beta firmwares for wrt54gv8 recently posted. But how can I flash it? I can not even get rid of vxworks. Jtag cable might be an option but too complicated for me.

Any one successfully flashed it already? even through Jtag cable?

Thanks!

Yes, it has been successfully flashed using JTAG only, We are working on a prep file if you are interested in testing it ?

This is great news!!

I'd like to try this out as well. I will try to make a simple bridge off of the wrt54g v8 first.

In the download section (Betas), I downloaded a generic.micro.bin file in the same spot where I saw a wrt54gv8.mirco.bin file, but when I tried to upgrade the firmware I got a "Upgrade Failed". Do you guys know what I am doing wrong?

this version firmware is based on vxworks rather than linux. DD-WRT certainly is a linux kid. Therefore, we should get rid of vxworks first, let the system boot up into a maintainable mode.

Next, we are going to tftp the "beta" firmware to re-write the flash. Till then, DD-WRT will be on. vxworks prevents any tftp attempts. Another way is to use Jtag cable. I prefer not running into Jtag stuff if we can. We have to wait until support team figures out the vxworks prep and killer packages. I wish I would know something about vxworks in order to help.

p.s. Tornado, if you have prep and killer package ready, please send it to us to test it. Thanks!

currently the only way is to flash it with a JTAG cable (afaik), however there is a work-around in the works.

as far as crashing is concerned, try turning off UPnP. This helped on the older routers.

I have a spare WRT54G v8 laying around here. I have no use for it unless it has dd-wrt. So i am interested in testing this prep file, or whatever else you guys need testing for on this v8. the sky is the limit =]

I'd be interested once someone laid out the entire process. I'm not familiar with killer packages, jtag cables etc, so I would need step-by-step instructions. Please let me know work progresses on this. Thanks.

I also have a WRT54G v8 that I just received from a place that will charge a restocking fee. I'm willing to wait it out, although I may go and pick up another one anyways. I'm up for testing whatever needs to be tested to get this working. I'm a programmer by trade, but haven't ever done any firmware hacking, but am not afraid to get my hands dirty.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help the v8 progress.

Hi,
do you know if there have been any updates on this topic?
At least, did any of you managed to successfully flash with a JTAG cable?

Hey Guys,
I had offered to test a little while ago and was told that testing was done so i thought a release was coming soon, should i take back the v8 and buy something else i avoided returning it thinking if i gave it a month the release would come, but if testers are still needed I'm down for that ?

cheers,
brianp
