I recently installed DD-WRT v23 SP1 Final (05/16/06) vpn on a new WRT54GL. Yes, I installed the mini first. While the router initially works well, after varying amounts of time, it crawls to a halt and requires a power down. I can't even connect to the router via the browser when things slow down. Then, after the power off/on, all is well again for a brief period of time. Brief period of time = as long as a couple of hours to only a few minutes. In fact, I had to do a reset during the brief time it took to write this post.
QoS is OFF. Transmitter power is boosted slightly to 50mW. Processer is NOT overclocked. FWIW, I do NOT have to reset my Cable Modem -- only the WRT54GL -- to restore routing.
Are others having this problem with the VPN version? Is this problem by chance ABSENT from the non-VPN version? I can switch to the non-VPN version w/o loss of function so that would provide the quickest solution.

Using v23 SP1 (05/16/06) std I had the problem that after some time (haven't checked how long exactly) the load increased to values around 1. Restarting httpd or simply rebooting fixed this. As you are using QoS (I don't use it), maybe the high load sort of "blocks" QoS from processing requests and as a result slows down the router.
I'm currently using v23 SP1 (06/09/06) std (multilanguage version) where this problem doesn't seem to occur any longer - uptime more than three days without problems.
Greetings
