Hello,
I've taken the plunge into the unknown (for me) and am trying to set up a brand new Netgear Nighthawk r7000 as a secondary router to The Orange livebox router provided by my service provider which is orange (we live in France).
Why ?, well I want to flash dd-wrt onto the router so I can use it with NordVPN.

QUESTION 1: When starting to flash 'factory-to-dd-wrt.chk', the GUI said my firmware level was higher than the flash, and that I was to use a modified version....
dd-wrt.K3_R7000_mod.chk worked OK ( I think), so then do I flash the webflash.bin for normal builds or do I flash the K3_AC_ARM_STD.bin file ??? If it's the latter file where do I find it ?

QUESTION 2: I'm referencing the document 'How to build a VPN router' by Nathan Taylor dated Apri 06, 2018.
The information seems to me to be contradictory, should I set the IP address of the new secondary router to 192.168.2.1 or to 192.168.1.20 (refer to instructions on Setup and Setting up the router as a client.

I'm sure I'll have other questions as i learn about all this, so I'll keep the thread open.
i appreciate any advice that will help me.
Regards
Phil

To get the best out of DDWRT and the forum read the forum guidelines with helpful pointers:

If you did not already read them please do !

I will transfer your question to the right forum.
If you are already using DDWRT then you use the .bin files for upgrading

That article tells you to do a 30/30/30, which you do NOT do on Broadcom ARM, especially the R7000. Here is the linked article for everyone following:

https://www.techradar.com/vpn/how-to-build-a-vpn-router

Here is the device wiki, if you didn't already have it:

https://wiki.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Netgear_R7000

P.S. if the reference isn't a forum thread/post or a DD-WRT wiki article, it is garbage since most 'How-tos' on the Internet in respect to this firmware are not maintained.

Thanks for the replies Very Happy

Good news, it's all working so I'm real happy.

I did the 30/30/30 reset before I got the last reply , and it's still working (phew).
The key for me was getting the cascading right by setting the secondary IP address at 192.168.2.1

Happy holidays
