WHR-G54S crash & restore to factory firmware

I have installed dd-wrt v23 sp1 and voip on a Buffalo WHR-G54S, but it crashes at least every other day. I checked the wiki for slow router/crashes, but none of the issues there apply to me. So, I returned to factory firmware 1.4 - German. Then I downloaded the English version from the Buffalo Europe site (encoded), but the German firmware says that it is invalid firmware.

So, 2 questions:
a. how to load the English language firmware from the German language firmware?
b. does anyone else have the problem of regular crashes with dd-wrt? (ideally, I would like to run dd-wrt as it gives me more flexibility, but not at the cost of a crash every other day)
