I set the tx power of the card on the DD-WRT/Avila board to 20dbm (I know the card is capable of it):

iwconfig ath0 txpower 20

Do you know if the tx power is actually what I set? If not, please shed some light. Thanks.

I got the following:

# iwconfig ath0
ath0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:"rootnet"
Mode:Master Frequency:2.417 GHz Access Point: 00:16:E6:34:D6:30
Bit Rate:0 kb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm Sensitivity=0/3
Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality=49/92 Signal level=-46 dBm Noise level=-95 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:220107 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

# iwlist ath0 txpower
ath0 8 available transmit-powers :
0 dBm (1 mW)
5 dBm (3 mW)
7 dBm (5 mW)
9 dBm (7 mW)
11 dBm (12 mW)
13 dBm (19 mW)
15 dBm (31 mW)
17 dBm (50 mW)
Current Tx-Power=20 dBm (100 mW)

Maximum Power: 50 mW

iwlist and iwconfig reports already the current tx power. so if it returns 20dbm, it should be 20dbm and nothing else

Thanks. The reason I posted the question was that

if I set the txpower beyond the card's capability (the card's tx power is <= 100mW=20dbm) , for example,

iwconfig ath0 txpower 23

It does not seem to complain. iwlist shows

# iwlist ath0 txpower
ath0 8 available transmit-powers :
0 dBm (1 mW)
5 dBm (3 mW)
7 dBm (5 mW)
9 dBm (7 mW)
11 dBm (12 mW)
13 dBm (19 mW)
15 dBm (31 mW)
17 dBm (50 mW)
Current Tx-Power=23 dBm (199 mW)

Maximum Power: 50 mW

In fact, whatever txpower you set, you always "get" it. What is your thought on this? Thanks.

manual iwconfig is not the way, dd-wrt goes internally. for example. if you are in client mode and the client is not associated it will always look like this. but after it associates it will return to the maximum power setting
