Followed these instructions and it worked perfectly. Well, it worked perfectly once I turned my software firewall off. I kept getting an "Access Error" when trying to tftp the DD-WRT firmware to the router. Once I disabled the firewall, all was good.
I put the VXkiller on my WRT54GS V7 now I have no power light, and I cant log in to the router with this address tftp -i 192.168.1.1 to flash with with DD-wrt. Help. I do have a port 1 light where my desktop is plugged into. Thanks

This process ALSO works with the WRT54GSv7 with only a little HEX modification to the vxworkskillerv8!
*Of course, you'll have to reset the router to factory defaults before flashing*
Here's what I did:
1) Log into the WRT54GSv7.
2) Under the Administration tab, RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULTS.
3) Go back to the Administration tab [192.168.1.1].
4) Firmware Upgrade via the Linksys GUI vxworkskillerGSv8-v3.bin
5) Update will be successful.
6) Manually configure your Network Card to a manual IP something like 192.168.1.77, then Manually configure Gateway to 192.168.1.1, DNS to 192.168.1.1
7) Hold down the RESET button on router for 30 seconds.
8 ) Wait about 30 more seconds, then unplug router.
9) HOLD DOWN reset button, then plug-in router. Then release reset button after 5 seconds.
10) QUICKLY Open command prompt, and use TFTP command:
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put dd-wrt.v24_micro_wrt54gv8.bin
11) You will see the activity light on your network indicator "go crazy".
[[If #11 doesn't happen AND you get TFTP TIMED OUT, I had to repeat step 9 then 10 to be quicker]]
12) Wait about 10 minutes, and the TFTP should acknowledge success. (mine took 6 sec)
13) Log into DD-WRT Router!!!!
Thank you BrainSlayer + Tornado!!! ... GRRRREAT!
OK Tried running the original post to the letter. Got the web interface and all looked well. Problem is that none of the nav buttons would accept or initiate changes in the router. I then ran this utility above..
Found a trick to ensure you're hitting the tftp at the right time. open two terminals or cmd prompts run ping 192.168.1.1 -t (win) and a similar command under linux to constantly ping the router. When booted under the dd-wrt kernel the ttl is 64 when the router has flipped back to it's "POST" the TTL is 100 initiate your tftp during this phase Have the tftp code ready in the second terminal so when you release the reset button and see the ping responding and TTL 100 you can hit enter and send the command. Try this and you'll be sure to catch the "vulnerable varmint"
Pushed the flash utility back in and again any changes I make to the settings through the gui don't actually change anything. It just opens the window http://192.168.1.1/apply.cgi and sits there never changing.

Clear the cache on your web browser. The web interface should work after that.

Did you set a static IP? Set your IP to 192.168.1.7, the mask to 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway to 192.168.1.1. Then continue at step 7 in the post that I quoted above. _________________ WRT54G v3 - v24 r14471M NEWD Eko - AP

What happens is that DD-WRT will load and run for just a few seconds and then appear to crash.
During these few seconds of operation, I can see the AP available on other computers. DHCP works for LAN. The config page will even begin to load. The Power and WLAN lights are lit at usual brightness and any LAN ports plugged in are the same.
Here is a ping log:
Code:

From there it never recovers (even if it sits for hours).
I am completely out of ideas and would appreciate any help.

You need to enter it in a command prompt... not Firefox. _________________ WRT54G v3 - v24 r14471M NEWD Eko - AP

Clearing the browser cache worked to resolve the issue. I can't believe I hadn't thought of that. If I'd just gotten frustrated and rebooted the system I'd have never known.. Thanks all for assist!!
Can anyone confirm this works for the GS v7.2? I don't have jtag, nor am I experienced in using one, so I don't want to try flashing it until I know it SHOULD work.
I have a WRT54GS V7, now how do I tell what chip I have or does it matter. DO I just flash with instructions above. If not could someone show me the exact instructions to use. Thanks much
I am wondering the same thing.
My v4 went smoothly no issues, now I have a v7.2 and just want to make sure this works fine, so I don't brick it.
A couple of additional questions...
* I have no idea how to tell what flash chip I have, how can I check this?
* Once I load a dd-wrt firmware onto this can I load subsequent new versions of dd-wrt firmware directly through the GUI?
Alright, I've got a v7.2. I keep getting "Timeout occurred" when trying to TFTP the new firmware on. Also, with the little TFTP application, I have no success either. Help?
So I ran the vxworkskillerGSv7-v3.bin in the firmware upgrade, and it worked. Then it said it was re-starting...then everthing went out. My internet does not work, and I can't get back into the router. All of the lights on my router are still on...has my unit bricked?
