I already flashed my wrt54gv8 to the "dd-wrt v24-sp2 (1/16/10) micro" FW. What I'm looking for is anyone that has used later/improved/stable FW that this on the Linksys WRT54G_V8.0. Thanks!
PS: Use is as a client bridge on a mixed N-G network. Looking for all to have the same subnet.
Just got done with the steps, but I can't access 192.168.1.1 via the http. But I pinged the router and that works fine. When I try to tftp the binary file, it says that the tftp can not read from the file.

i followed the instructions at the original post and everything is fine. comes up with the dd-wrt interface.
i have a wrt 54gs v7.
i do not see the openvpn application under services, and i want to use my FW as a vpn. i already have all the certificates generated and a client configured with open vpn
do i need to flash more things to get open vpn running on it?
if I look on the status page where it says "Memory" is this the same as checking the NVRAM? It says i have 5768kb free

A WRT54GS v7 is a neutered router which only has 2MB of flash memory space for firmware storage and can therefore only use a "micro" build.
There is no room for OpenVPN in those builds, you'll have to get yourself a router suitable for the job you want it to do.
These old neutered routers are only good as access points or for giving to your old auntie who only downloads her email or browses to a few web sites every now and then. _________________ Kernel panic: Aiee, killing interrupt handler!

I have a Linksys WRT54GS v7
After trying multiple micro versions of dd-wrt and getting bad performance on wifi I reverted to the newest Linksys firmware (1.00.4 build 005) to see how that would fare.
Now I cannot flash dd-wrt anymore. When I try to flash vxworkskillerGSv7-v3.bin it just goes to http not found after a few secs and doesn't do anything.
I cannot even go back to the older linksys stock firmware.
Has anybody done this version?
update: solved this by reverting to 7.5 linksys and then flashing dd-wrt. however, the wifi is still slow.

Just wanted to share that I have successfully updated a WRT54Gv8 unit to build 30082. The unit had been in use on the 2010 build mentioned in the installation wiki at http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/How_To_Flash_the_WRT54Gv8 and was working ok as a general purpose AP.
I decided to try out a current build on the unit, as the one listed in the wiki is 5 years old! I located the current build folder (30082) and found ftp://ftp.dd-wrt.com/betas/2016/07-01-2016-r30082/broadcom/dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin available for this unit. Initial flash attempts failed immediately. The web gui would not flash and simply reported a failure. Ok, so I did a 30/30/30 reset and that seemed to have bricked the unit. I was not getting any power lights. I went home and came back to work the next day, did a few more 30/30/30 resets and noticed that when I had an ethernet cable connected, I got a link light on that port, but no power/internet LEDs on. Ok, I could also ping the default IP of 192.168.1.1 so great! It's only unresponsive, not truly bricked!
So, I grabbed my copy of TFTP.exe, selected the current 30082 build listed above, and flashed the rom via tftp. After waiting a minute or so, I ran a ping and the IP was live again, so I was able to log into it via web and voila - default password reset page for 30082! I proceeded to configure the unit as I want it and am about to return it to it's spot in the front of the building. I've soft reset and 30/30/30 reset it several times post updating just to make sure everything was clear from the nvram and there wouldn't be a problem going forward.
The only issue I have detected so far is that remote web access does not seem to work over port 8080. It just isn't responsive. Note that this micro build does not support HTTPS, and only HTTP, but port 8080 just would not respond to web request once enabled under Administration->Management->Remote Access->Web GUI Management.
The unit just works at the default IP address it has on normal port 80, so loading the IP in your web browser will present the normal public status page of dd-wrt to the world and then you will need to click somewhere for the password prompt to log in. _________________ Testing 2x TP-Link Archer C7 v2 with 38326

I was able to get dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin flashed to this using the instructions on the Wiki using TFTP etc. My question is the dd-wrt.v24_micro_generic.bin 08/02/10 14929 the best micro firmware of dd-wrt or is there something more current that should be upgraded to?

Depends who you ask and what you're doing with it, but the krack fixes (for client modes) are since 33772, and some are on latest builds (incl me), but others use builds in the ~335xx-336xx range, as some report the krack-fixed bcm drivers have wireless issues. Also, some have reported better signal on newer builds, though I don't recall if that was based on actual client device reporting, or the DD GUI (the calculation for which has changed over the years). I have 36698 on my GSv6, but only tested it for a day. Note: if it matters, there have been VAP issues lately (there is a workaround). I had mentioned micro builds since due to the relative old age of this router I assume that for dd-wrt that micro builds are the only builds that can fit on this WRT54GSv7. Can one put regular builds of dd-wrt on to this particular model or does it only have enough space for the micros?
I do not want to do anything out of the ordinary with it perhaps keep it around for spare for normal Wifi use or possibly extend wifi signal from a new router for a small office.
